$850 for my Bianchi, which was prebuilt. Plus another $100-ish on a few goodies for it.

And I'd say around $450 total for my last single speed...

That's not too bad actually.

I've actually made money on my SS MTBs I reckon. $25 on one $45 on the other. Woulda made more if I hadn't spent money on fancy spacers.

Salsa Lip-Lock gold seatpost clamp: 23

766 total, and it still has a crappy crank and wheelset. ouch. Funny how stupid little stuff piles up.

Then again there's no way i can drop 750 in one shot on a bike, so dribbling out upgrades like these are compatible with my paycheck way moreso than buying a Cinelli.

Yes, you are right! I've done LOTS of bargaining, trading, and negotiating to get this. Plus, I don't drink (much), smoke, party, collect sneakers/cars/[insert collectable here] or anything like that. So, what little money I have for recreation goes into my bikes.

Thanks for the bars, Scrod!

Further...

I had a good friend who used to make a modest amount of money. He owned a skate shop at one time (had to close it) and later he worked at a bar doing odd jobs (doorman, bussing tables, etc...) He always had nice cars. When I knew him he had an older BMW M3. He has since sold it and got a 90s Porsche 911. He got it for CHEAP from a rich guy who was having a hard time with money. Everyone swore he sold drugs. I know that he didn't. He explained to me how it did it. Basically, be on the lookout for a good bargain, negotiate hard but fair, and be ready to buy when the opportunity presents itself.

He takes REALLY good care of his cars, so he always gets good money for them when he resells them. Did I mention that he details cars on the side, too? He also did 99.9% of all of his maintenance work himself.

I've taken that approach to buying selling my race gear. Look for good deals. Take great care of my gear before reselling it.

The same applies to houses and whatnot.

It was hard to calculate the exact number for each, since they came from CL (except Kilo) in different forms and some swapping was involved, but however the rough estimate is below:

$250

$450

$600

$400

$450

This is implicit in what you said, but with cars especially, having a chunk of CASH set aside ready to go when a deal presents itself is huge. You have to be ready to move right then, not "oh let me sell my bmw first" etc. even if you could get great money for the car/bike/stem/crank/whatever you have already. Unfortunately my nest egg is for if something in my house goes wrong. Like say a furnace or AC unit or etc. Bummer.

RB-021 = 35$
PD-M520 = 45$
China Poo Wheels = 67$
Ribmos = 60$
KMC-710SL = 18$
Canecreek S2 headset = 20$
Miche Supertype = 30$
Ritchey Seat = 15$
Fizik microtek = 16$

about 300 bucks...

although I sold the original wheelset for 120 (crazy I know) and most of the other parts that were removed as well.
so all in all I probably just paid for the kilo.

My Alien cost me approx. $419 to build up. A lot of parts sourced for free, with major expenses being frame/fork and wheels.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to build a Kilo TT from the deluxe frame on bikeisland.

I was hoping to find a used Kilo TT and replace the drivetrain with nicer parts and some other parts that I already have - most of which were acquired from awesome deals. I haven't been able to find a reasonably priced used/beat-up Kilo TT around here for the past couple of months, though. I was kind of hoping to ride it as a beater looking bike so I won't be paranoid locking it up in the city or getting scratches on it.

I did a bunch of calculations on my "bike spreadsheet".

The Kilo TT deluxe build would end up costing about $550. Is that reasonable for a Kilo TT with decent parts and average wheelset? The resale value of said parts is pretty good.

Edit:
I know, I'm deciding between a beater frame and a new deluxe frame and choosing the new frame contradicts the whole reason why I want a beater, but..... that green looks effn' gorgeous and the price difference would be about $100.
