Omnium grinding sound etc

Ok. Just finished the build and its all done! Just need to throw on the back brake and some tape and its all done. Every single basic part I need to ride safely and adequately for my purposes is in place!

Now when I installed the cog on my wheel and threw the chain around, i turned the cranks and I heard like a hella weird ass sound coming from the crank where the chain hit the chainring.

My first instinct was that it was the chainline that was off. But for some odd reasons it didnt look off at all. But it prolly was because when I took the wheel off and threw it on the singlespeed side, it was fine. The thing is, the teeth on the singlespeed freewheel are farther away from the spokes (farther out) then the teeth of the cog on the fixed side.

Jus tmaking sure that my assumptions are right. Is it bad chainline tahts creating this sound?

Is your chain dry? Is your bb or cranks installed incorrectly?

Don't mind the sound they're just the omniums onomnomnomnomnomnomnomnoming for the first time around.

Errr did you install the cranks/ BB by yourself? Maybe you should reinstall as something seems to have been improperly done in the process.

haha so i think we have pretty much the same setup as you replied to my post a few weeks back. Kilo with omniums right?

does the noise sorta sound like the chain is sticking to the chainring? if so, like happypills said, i'm pretty sure it's new omnomnomnoms haha. when the chain is properly lubed, my bike is practically silent while riding. BUT, while upside down and cranks turning, there is definitely noise between the cranks and chain.

my chainline looks good too. not exactly sure about your setup but we could be hearing the same thing. i just try to keep my drive train clean and lubed and everything seems to be good while riding. when it starts to get noisy again i just relube. oh and make sure the chain isnt too tight

The Omnium chainring has a really rough matte finish and makes some noise when it's brand new, especially if your chain is dry/too tight.

Mine made noise when I had a new chain and Omnium set. If your chainline looks OK, just give the components some time to settle in.

Yeah you were right actually. I took it out for a spin on instinct that it was just new parts needing some love.

Now the only noise I hear is my freewheel lol. Now I gotta see if it actually is silent with my fixed cog lol.

Thanks for the help guys. It really was the omnonomnomnomnomnomnomnom. Lol. Rides like a dream. Ive been out of it so long it felt wonderful and.....my legs are hella out of shape. And for some reason, idk. Steering felt a lot different from when I rode my windsor lol. I know i looked at the geo but don't know how much its dif from the hour.

Need new brakes, the ones i have now are wearing out from when I had the Hour. But other than that, it rides beautifully. Ill be posting pics soon on the thread I made AGES ago.

Lol. Eighthinch Amelias are =). Think it was 99.50 for the wheelset + strips + tubes + tires + cog/lockring. AND people say for the price you can't beat it at all and that they are actually very nice wheel sets.

BTw. Chain IS properly lubed, and I did install everything myself. Wouldn't have it any other way =p.

Im having problems getting used to pulling the chain tight anyway lol.

Now i lost my manual thingy that came with the cranks (the foldout paper thingy). After rain riding, u just relube all the parts? As in remove the entire BB? Or just relube the external bearings? Pretty sure its the latter. but you never know. Can never be to sure.

Ill let you know how it rides with the fixed side. Pretty sure it shoudl be ok though.

From my experience, Omnium rings are extremely loud when they are brand new but will quiet down as they wear in.

After riding in the rain, wipe your chain clean with a rag, or use a chain cleaner box thing if you have one of those. Then slowly lube every roller on your chain and spin your crank for awhile so it lets the lube go into the rollers of each link. Go do your thing for about 10mins or so, then come back and wipe your chain clean with a different rag. Well...everyone's got different chain cleaning ritual but that one is what I usually do.

Ohhh no i meant just clean off and relube the chain. I'd do like vixtor just said. i do similar and it works wonders when it comes to quieting down the noise that seems to come back every few rides. my drivetrain is definitely quieting down after putting some good miles on the new chainring though.

i had similar woes. diagnosing the source of said noise is a pain in the arse. or to put it more technically: a process of elimination.

i recently replaced the chain on my fixed gear and almost died when i heard the noise i made on the downstroke. i scratched my head and then replaced my rear cog with a brand-spanking new one. still there was noise. hmmm. i then replaced the front chainring with a brand-spanker and viola! instantly the noise ceased.

i suspect it was because my chainring had become worn-in to the old chain. the old chain had become quite stretched.

i'm glad it was that because i was getting ready to replace the bb had that not fixed the noise.

i certainly wasn't going to consider replacing my mks neuvos! (which are sweet pedals btw)
