Is there a good place to buy a single wheel? Or to get a custom build?

I searched, but I've never really found a definite place. Most ebay only shops only sell them buy the pairs. Any good recommendation's?

VeloMine does custom builds.

Or your local shops, some of them might not even charge labour if you buy all of the parts at the store.

Velomine also sells single track wheels.

So does Bell's Bike Shop if you contact them about it.

I'm very happy with the wheels I brought from http://www.prowheelbuilder.com/ last year. The have an online wheel-spec tool that will price out a single wheel.

Add Universal Cycles to this list of single wheel building capabilities.

Ben's Cycle recently made wheelbuilding labor free, and they don't require two wheels.

do you need a front or back? search ebay with 700c front or 700c back/rear and you should get a couple... or just buy a pair and keep the spare for if/when you bend one or for parts or flip it

These guys are good.

And of course, LBS.

Handbuild wheels are nice, but one handbuilt = one machine built set pricewise.

sure, but how does the rest of the ROI equation look?

Maybe i've been lucky, but my machine built sets(with initial trueing and tension check) have been holding up just as fine as my hand built set.I've hit a pothole with one bad enough to gouge the rim and snakebite the tires sidewall and the wheel is still true(dp18/formula).

This reminds me, does Velomine and other sites that sell wheelsets allow you to request things like having the front wheel MSW'ed?

xkillemallx16 03-06-11 02:41 PM

yes.

c0urt 03-07-11 01:31 AM

that is an important question, front or back.

there is always read up. lace it yourself and have a lbs dish it, and tension it, and true it, that should run about $35 + or - in labor or if you live in a city with a co-op you can get that done or re-checked for cheaper if they have the tools.

Sixty Fiver 03-07-11 01:51 AM

Court - For $35.00 you should be able to have a wheel built up... would rather that people did not try to help me out by lacing a wheel for me as my fee includes lacing and there are steps in the lacing process I would rather not get overlooked and I am going to have to check that anyways.

Most shops stock single wheels and if it is a machine built wheel it is always prudent to have someone check to make sure it has been tensioned and trued and properly stress relieved... this will bring the wheel up to an acceptable build quality.

c0urt 03-07-11 06:55 PM

I said plus or minus I don't remember the exact price. I have had the benefit of not needing wheels in ages Thanks for for help on the rate. Given the choice and type of lacing and spokes I would let you lace mine. and if it were front vs rear. in a heart beat. After having a nashbar wheel rear fail during a skid , I have gotten picky during about my wheels especially my rears.
