Fixie Crank Conversion Help
Once again an old Schwinn Varsity! So im wondering can someone help me how do i make the bike able to use a 3 piece crank instead of the 1 piece? and Whats better do you think? Would a 1 piece be good on a fixie or is a 3 piece better? Because if i stick with a 1 piece i can find pedals that a clip adaptable online for cheap but then again i have a 3 piece crank and orgin 8 track pedals? What do i need to make the conversion and what would be better cost wise? Thanks for your help!

You could buy one of those BB converters or run BMX cranks.

On a Varsity I'd just run the stock 1 piece crank rather than spending the money to convert it and put a different crank on. I suppose if you already have a 3 piece crank it might be worthwhile. You'll need the converter Squirrelli mentioned.

Considering the quality of frames that come with ashtabula cranks, I don't think its worth it get a converter.Just get a BMX chainring.Also, dialing in chainline is pretty easy on a one piece.

i put this converter BB on my american BB bike and it worked out fine. i would recommend the shell converters though since those will give you more overall BB options.

Electro-Forged Schwinns have no threads in the bottom bracket. I say stick with the one piece crank, just throw some clips and straps on some old schwinn road pedals and call it good to go. Commuted thousands of miles on an old one piece, as long as you lube and adjust it, it isn't that bad.
