You guys seem to forget that any aluminum tube that is dented will fail at that point eventually. Infact, all Al frames will fail at some point, it's one of the downsides to the metal. Once you get into the high end, thin walled Al frames they are much, much more prone to failure due to damage than CF.

The only downside to CF is that it can fail from damage you can't see, where most Al frames or parts fail from damage that is usually visable if you take the time to inspect your bike. I wouldn't use CF cranks because I can get Al ones that are just as good for much less, but there is no way you're going to break them with your epic quads.

Yeah, that was Shelly Old's BMC Track Machine. She went head over heels when a girl slid down the track in front of her. No race-spec frame could have survived that. Did you notice how the carbon fiber Mavic Io (5 spoke) and Comet (disc) wheel stayed intact?

The best part about that clip is watching someone run her head over(!) and she just sits up with a suprised look on her face.

The girl that started the crash got away without crashing.

At the 0:20 mark you'll notice a woman go sharply up-track (up the track) and a second woman follow her. That second woman isn't following her on purpose. Her front wheel is overlapped with the first woman. The second woman is holding on for dear life and eventually falls starting the chaos.

The move by the first woman is unusual and totally ill-advised and unexpected. Every time I've seen that move it caused (or almost caused) a wreck.

Wow, even at world-class level, riders still move up track without caution.

That's why I have no desire to race on a track. On the plus side, a wreck at that speed on a track won't sandpaper off your face like asphalt will...

Yup. It was a bone-head move.

Don't let videos/pics of dramatic wrecks scare you. There are videos of bikes vs cars and those don't keep you from riding on the street do they? Wrecks are actually very rare on the track, but they get lots of publicity.

Stupid moves happen all the time. This weekend I was riding behind 2 cars and a two girls and a guy were waiting to cross the street. The girls clearly saw both cars and myself. They waited patiently as the two cars went by then promptly darted out in front of me almost causing me to pancake both of them. I gave them an ear full. The dude was still on the curb waiting and watching. I thanked him for not doing what they did.

That US rider in the video above raced the very next day.

Track is safer than road. You don't have corners, loose gravel, other road hazards, no cars (not all races are on closed courses) and riders seem more predictable. I was only cat 5 (10 races needed to upgrade) and I had seen several crashes. My friends that race track have hardly any crash stories to tell me

    About carbon.

Obviously anything can break when it's stressed beyond design intent. A steel track frame will not be a strong as a carbon mountain frame because they are designed differently. A track wheel used for loaded off-road touring might break, no matter what it's made of. And a properly designed and constructed bike, used according to it's design intent, will not break weather it's made of carbon, alu, steel, or bamboo.

That said, all these materials will behave differently when you go outside the design intent. Over stress carbon, and it will probably break. Over stress steel and it will permanently bend. Over stress aluminum and it will bend unless it's heavily fatigued in which case it can crack. That's the key difference. A while ago in a crash I bent my steel fork, the bike was still ridable. Carbon wouldn't have bent, it would have broken, and the bike would not have been ridable.

Carbon is also much more sensitive to invisible cracks/defects. If I ever drop my U-lock on my top tube, I will look and see if there is a dent. If there is a big dent with sharp edges, I probably will not ride my frame. If I drop my U-lock on a carbon top tube, I would have no way of knowing whether or not there is an invisible crack that could lead to sudden failure.

These two things (failure mode and sensitivity to invisible defects) are what make many say steel is more safe, particularly on a bike that will be stressed beyond what the designers may have planned for.

Of course. Especially since he's "cyclist second."

This should pretty much settle all of this.

Gregory Bauge on carbon cranks during the Team Sprint finals in the 2010/2011 World Championships. Team Sprint is the event from the Standing Start video. The most rigorous event in track cycling.:

Oh, and he and his team won the World Championship today, by the way. I'm sure he mashed pretty hard on them

Well those legs are just more tanned, shaved, and well lit. lol.

But that video gave me complete confidence in carbon track cranks.

I was mistaken, the rider is Gregory Bauge. Here is the footage from today. The Team Sprint is around the 5 minute mark. Bauge is the lead-out guy.

Bauge is the guy on the top of podium "1" on the right side with silver shoe covers:

^ FFFFUUU, video not available in Canadia!

I thought first picture was Sierau but realized he wasn't as dark.

Carleton, is there anywhere I could watch live videos of UCI track races?
