Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Well, he did say he "rides" with evilliealotmore, so that pretty much means he doesn't ride.

On a similar note, I converted an old Fuji Supreme today which ended up momentarily with a 52/15 ratio. Ridiculous. Switched a 17t on the back. Right. The picture.

This is my Fuji Obey Track Bike. Originally a true single speed. I rode It for a couple of years with seveal different cogs on the back but always was in need of a gear change while encounteing different riding conditions on any particular day.
I recently installed a Sturmey Archer S3x Single Speed conversion kit. I just can't begin to explain what a difference this hub conversion has made in my love of this bike. Now head winds coming in off Lake Erie no longer are an issue-- just click down for a reduction to the gearing and spin , spin, spin.
Just lovin' this ride!

Ok guys I just did a cleanup of this thread. Let's keep the bashing down to zero in this thread. Besides let them find out for themselves what will work/ not work for them. It's a part of learning.

Tell me about it..

I am not looking forward to the day that I will have to purchase a car. Currently, I get to class and work (and to friends places) all via bike. (although, most of my income has been put into my bikes haha)

our VW bus is far from decent and it still costs a new bike in gas/repairs every few months.
thusly why we never drive it.... (and buy bikes instead)
