cracked steerer
i have a very nice steel fork that i was going to install on my bike, but i just discovered this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/58741524@N06/5559437112/ it is the inside of the steerer. Those two lines seem to be cracks. What do you think? The steerer is steel. It is powdercoated inside. So it might be just the powdercoat thing but I can not really inspect it because it is only on the inside of the steerer. There are no marks or imperfections on the outside. |
florescent penetrate inspection time.

I doubt it's a crack, looks more like just staining of the unfinished steel that's been exposed to friction or moisture or something. You see that a lot with older steel tubing.
Personally, I wouldn't call it a crack yet -- if you're worried do the penetrant inspection. |
You may have better luck if you post this in the framebuilders or mechanics forum (where it belongs).
