I could almost get a ball on bat photo at will (assuming the batter made contact, haha). Here's another:

I would go with Canon just for their wider range of lenses. A Canon 50D is pretty much a Nikon D90 equivalent.

Great choice, the D90 is an amazing camera. I would suggest that you get the 35mm 1.8 instead of the 50 though.

I own a D300 and a 17-50 2.8, a 35 1.8, and a few flashes. Sold everything else as I stopped shooting a bunch. Some pictures I took a while back:

I have a Canon Rebel Xsi with Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. I haven't taken many bike photos, but my shots can be found at https://flickr.com/drewshannon or https://drewshannon.net

Awesome shots. I'm casually toying around with the idea of trading my DSLR & Canon L lens for a really nice compact camera, just because the fact that my DSLR is so bulky sometimes prohibits me from taking it out and about.

Thanks, I sold a bunch of gear to get my x100 and I don't regret it one bit. My stuff was just sitting around. The x100 can be taken pretty much everywhere and its so small and discrete. I still have a nikon d300s with some lenses but I when im going somewhere I always grab the fuji. I still use the d300s for professional stuff.

Yeah man, I hear ya. I can pretty much straight-up trade my Canon 24-70 lens for an X100, but I know I'd probably regret it because that lens will have more resale value down the line. That said, I'm a total amateur and my DSLR ends up sitting in my bag most days because it's so big (I have battery grip and heavy lens). If I was going out with friends, for example, it'd be cool to have something like the X100 for high-quality shots in a small package.

Oh well, we'll see. Maybe I'll just start saving up some dough so I can get the X100 down the line.
