Comparing a PowerShot G series pro-sumer point and shoot to a SLR is comparing apples and oranges.
Here's the timing I had with SLRs
The ball-on-bat photo is one of the toughest in sports photography. One of the most rare is the broken bat. I got both
Oh, and this wasn't done with rapid fire 8fps shooting. 8fps isn't fast enough to catch this. Single shot is the only way.

I could almost get a ball on bat photo at will (assuming the batter made contact, haha). Here's another:

so im thinking about upgrading my current camera (e-p1) to a entry-mid level dslr. i was thinking about going with a d90 and a 50mm f1.8 lens. anyone have experience with this camera? anyone have suggestions? my budget is around 900 bucks.

Great choice, the D90 is an amazing camera. I would suggest that you get the 35mm 1.8 instead of the 50 though.

so i traded the madison i owned for a nikon d3100! i think its a pretty good trade considering the fact that the bike just sat and was never really ridden. next up is a 35mm prime! whats do you guys think of the d3100?

I have a Canon Rebel Xsi with Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. I haven't taken many bike photos, but my shots can be found at https://flickr.com/drewshannon or https://drewshannon.net
Awesome shots. I'm casually toying around with the idea of trading my DSLR & Canon L lens for a really nice compact camera, just because the fact that my DSLR is so bulky sometimes prohibits me from taking it out and about.

Thanks, I sold a bunch of gear to get my x100 and I don't regret it one bit. My stuff was just sitting around. The x100 can be taken pretty much everywhere and its so small and discrete. I still have a nikon d300s with some lenses but I when im going somewhere I always grab the fuji. I still use the d300s for professional stuff.

Oh well, we'll see. Maybe I'll just start saving up some dough so I can get the X100 down the line.
