what is your method of biking with your camera? do you use a deticated sling/messenger? or like an insert for your bag? or just your camera slinging off?

im looking for something inconspicuous, safe, and relatively cheap, any recommendations?

I never fancy carrying my heavy DSLR gear and lenses on the bike. I do have a pocket camera (Canon G11) that fits nicely in a saddlebag along with a few other bits and pieces.

If I were to carry my DSLR and a few lenses I'd look at either customising some panniers or just dealing with carrying a backpack.

How much gear are you looking to carry (size of camera, number and size of lenses etc)?

I got myself a nifty fifty just so I would take my DSLR with me more often. Lost the Battery grip so I could actually fit the damn camera in a bag, and then I just wrap the camera with a hat and throw it into one of my Timbuk2 bags. I would love to have a more safe/secure/easily accessible setup, but I have yet to find the perfect camera bag.

not looking to carry very much, maybe something enough for a couple lenses(maybe a prime and a small zoom), a body, and a flash, nothing too fancy

Expensive DSLR's and bikes don't mix IMO; a bad wreck or accident out of the blue could easily cost $1000's... that's why I always carry a point and shoot whenever I ride....

If I were to ride with my current main set up, I would have to get a pelican case that I can somehow mount onto a rack or fit in a pannier just for sense of mind.

When you say "a prime" are you talking a 50mm f/1.8 or a 600mm f/4? I'd guess something in the middle but it makes a huge difference.

I use a Lowepro Fastpack 300 which comfortably takes the gear I use most often - the bottom section with the separators comfortably takes a bulky DSLR with 4-5 lenses, leaving the top section free for batteries, flashcards, filters, energy snacks or whatever. I've got other larger Lowepro bags for when I want to carry the heavier and bulkier stuff with me, and have had good experiences with them - they seem very well designed for their purpose. At the other end I've got a bag that's little more than a pouch for the G11 which is handy if I'm using a backpack, as I figure my camera won't play nicely with a water bottle and multitool.

Your local camera shop will almost certainly have some kind of small shoulder bag that will fit whatever you want to put in it, so you can make sure that the specific gear you want to carry will fit in it and you can then carry it comfortably.

OP might want to make the distinction between just transporting the camera and being able to utilize the camera quickly while on the bike.

yeah.... taking pictures while riding may not be the best idea, especially in traffic and on a fixed....

a small hip bag with velcro closure and my yashica t3 is what I use mostly when riding for just taking shots whenever, planned or unplanned. If I know I want to take something and I have it planned out I'll use my d90/n50 with the 12-24 or 50mm and a ss bike with brakes to make shooting easier

also just for transportation and not shooting while riding I just put my camera bag inside of my messenger bag

camera bag inside of messenger bag, dont need camera bag to stand out, they get stolen that way and i travel much.

I leave the DSLR at home and take a small digital point and shoot in my saddle bag. I agree with Leukybear, DSLR's and bikes don't mix.

This is expensive but necessary if your carrying expensive equipment. You don't want a 3k camera+lens in a $50 backpack...Just sayin.

I personally am with some others here. Bike = P&S, although I do have a Lowepro Fastpack 350 backpack that I have used to carry my D200 + 17-55 + 70-200 + flash + accessories, etc., last time I went to the velodrome for example.

Whenever I carry my photo gear around, an RZ67 plus lens, I usually throw it in my daily bag but use some sort of protective cloth to wrap my gear in so I don't scratch it or anything. You can also buy dividers and use whatever bag you have to maybe pad the bottom or make compartments and that way you don't carry brand name bags that say steal me.
