Is it ok to use a 3/32 chain on a 1/8 cog?
Are there any pro's or con's to using a 1/8 chain on a 1/8 cog?
|
You can't use a 3/32 chain on 1/8 drive train parts; but you can the other way around... and to think you bought those reynolds SDVC66's just like how I did you would have a clue.....
Anyways, when you have a matching chain and drive chain size, drive chain noise is most likely reduced. |
3/32 chain cannot be used on a 1/8 cog or chainring.

The reason why I ask, and also the reason for my confusion is because of the following:
I purchased the motobecane team track: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...team_track.htm on the details it specifies: Crank - Shimano Dura Ace 49T Aluminum Track ring (3/32 width) Chain - KMC Z410 (3/32 width) I assumed the cog was also 3/32 so i just purchased a chain whip to swap out cogs but it would not work. i returned it and i purchased a 1/8th chain whip and everything worked great. How can i determine what I have? the manufacturer's website says 3/32 but the cog seems to be 1/8th for sure. The website specifically says it is also a 3/32 chain on a 1/8th cog... |
Well, you probably want to get a new cog anyway since 49/15 on the streets is pretty damn high. You can always take a ruler and measure the width of the cog
|
You can visualize also it. Here let me help since I have 2 cogs right here on my desk as paper weights, 3/32 teeth are as thick as a penny & 1/8 is as think as 2 pennies stacked. Hope it helps.

it's my track bike
|
i measured the chain width that is current on my bike and it is exactly 1/4 of an inch wide. this ruler doesn't have cm. but equates to .63 cm. is that a 1/8 or 3/32 chain?

all signs point to 3/32, so confused why the first chain whip would not work, but a 1/8th chain whip works great... |
its quite easy to just eyeball it and figure out what size you have...google some pics of 1/8 and 3/32

Thanks. I wonder why the website says 3/32 then. Made me buy all the wrong tools for it.
Here is my chain: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8090187/del/cycling/chain.jpg |
1cm = 2.54 inches so take 0.63/2.54 = 0.2480 inch
1/8" = 0.125" * 2.54cm/inch = 0.3175 cm 3/32" = 0.09375" * 2.54 cm/inch = 0.2381 cm Tom |
1/8=4/32
|
please excuse my density, but just to confirm from the pictures i posted i have a 1/8 cog and a 3/32 chain right? (this is what came natively with the purchased bike)

So I do indeed have a 3/32 chain on a 1/8th cog. Post #2 states that there is no way i can use a 3/32 with my 1/8 so he is wrong right?

If you have a 1/8" chain, you can use any combination of 3/32" and 1/8" cogs and chainrings. If you have a 3/32" chain, everything in your drivetrain must be 3/32". |
