I need a set of cheap brakes
So I have been riding brakeless on my early 70's Raleigh Grand Prix and I have gotten to the point where I would like to install brakes. However, I have 700c wheels and the bike came with 27" wheels, so my original brakes will not work. Could anyone recommend a set of cheap brakes that would be compatible with this setup? By the way, I really like the look of center-pulls, but if there is a cheaper side-pull option I would certainly consider it. Black would also match my bike, but that too is not a really critical feature.

How do you know the original brakes will not fit? I have the Weinmann version of the Dia-comp 650s and they fit just fine. If you need reach, you can go with the model 750. This assuming that center pull brakes will fit what you want to use.

So, I need a pair of front brakes. Since the frame doesn't have the bolts to hold wires for the back brake. Is there a way to put back brakes on without having those bolts? & I can just take a brake from an old bike and put it on a ss gear bike wheel? It's a 25inch wheel.

The difference between a front and a rear is the reach of the calipers and the length of the bolt. A front brakes only works on the front, and a rear brake only works on the rear. The cheapest way to keep the cables on the frame is with zipties, there are also aftermarket plastic or metal clips that look nicer, and work just fine.
First result on a crappy google search gave me these, no vouching for price but the quality will be just fine. http://www.amazon.com/Tektro-Single-.../dp/B002U166TQ |

I know they will not fit because I tried to attach them, and they did not fit. And center pulls do fit, because that's what came on my bike originally. I need long reach brakes, which I should have specified in my original post.

I bought a set of these for my Peugeot conversion w/ 700c wheels. There was still plenty of reach left. Doo eet. |
