save another $200 and open up your options to another level.

If I had only $300 to spend on a bike, I'd look for an older bike with shimano 105 or 600 components.

They're great bikes for the price you pay.

The Kilo TT is still, in my opinion, the best bang for the buck. But alas, it's outside of the OP's budget.

"Best" depends on what you're going to use the bike for. The Windsor Hour and Motobecane Track are nice for $280 shipped if you're just doing street riding/cruising.

...says cervelo4me.

You can find used stuff on craigslist and usually get a good deal if you know what to look for.

I agree, but it doesn't sound like the OP knows what to look for just yet.

Either of the BD bikes (the first two) are pretty good for the money and have good rep on this forum for a started fixed gear.

Im the minority voice here, but with the inconsistencies in the quality control over at BD I would not buy on of their bikes. Often times they are shipped with the wrong size seat post of bars. There have been large frame errors, and things just plain missing. There is also the fact that you have to do about 50% of the assembly yourself, which requires a level of knowlege and a tool set that most beginners just dont have.

Well, some of the problems you list do not apply to these specific bikes, and the alternatives are much worse. Fact is, at this price there are going to be problems no matter what choice you make, so it's more a matter of making the least bad choice. In my experience, the bd bikes are basically ok and the problems I've experienced have been annoying but not serious. I own both a Messenger bike and a Vilano framest, and the difference in quality is significant. The Messenger frame and fork are well made and alignment is good, whereas the Vilano was badly out of whack and poorly made. Also the Messenger has common dimensions, such as 1-1/8 fork steerer / stem and 27.2mm seatpost, whereas the Vilano has a 1" steerer /stem and a 25.4mm seatpost. The paint on the Messenger is good and horrible on the Vilano. My Messenger had no missing or defective parts although they did sent the wrong length stem and width bar for my size bike, but would have replaced them if I had asked, although I planned on changing them anyway so it didn't matter. Yes, the wheels were badly out of true and the hub bearings needed major adjustment, but the same will be true of the other choices. At least they used good quality spokes and brass nipples, so truing wasn't a problem. The components on the bd bikes are good enough to get the job done safely if not very elegantly. In important areas such as brake calipers, even the cheapest models come with decent dual pivot calipers that can actually work when needed as opposed to some of the worthless single pivot junk found on other bikes. I'm not trying to be a promoter or appologist for bd, but just trying to put things into perspective.

Working at a bike shop, I've seen more than my share of Fujis get delivered that never should have made it past a competent QC team IMO. It's mostly the lower-end stuff but I have encountered quite a few blunders on high-end, full-carbon roadies as well.

Mostly paint/finish blemishes but there have been a few occasions where braze-on front derailleur mounts were installed crooked or in the wrong position. If I were buying a bike that expensive, I'd expect that **** to be right.

The shop also sells Litespeed and those things are always flawless when they come in.

Wow that's terrible as breaking one off a carbon frame! Have any culprits/ shockers?

Whichever one you like more. They are the same main frame, though I think the forks are made of different types of steel.

Depends on what matters most to you. The Moto track is cleaner looking with few decals and no rack bosses on the seatstays. The Windsor Hour has a better cromo triple butted fork instead of a hiten fork on the Moto Track. It could come down to color choices and availability.
