Old cranks on new BB squeak
Shimano 600 cranks from 1988 on new Sugino square taper bb are making a lot of squeaking noise. It's not the bb cups. Any suggestions besides tightening the crank arm bolt as hard as I can?

Grease the spindle interface.

Greasing a square-taper spindle isn't always the best idea.

I'm having the same trouble. IT IS THE CRANK BOLTS. I tighten them down, they loosen up, I tighten them down, they loosen up...............
After I tighten them, no creaking. I was thinking of going back to the bolts from the old BB. They're tightened with a 14mm socket. There was never any creaking with the old BB with these bolts. The new BB, Interloc Racing, has 8mm hex key bolts with rubber seals. I have a suspicion that the rubber seals may have something to do with the loosening. Before I put the old bolts back on I'll remove the rubber seals on the new hex bolts and see if that solves the problem. |
Its the bolts use the 14mm hex bolts .thats why I run cottered cranks YOU TIGHTEN THEM WITH A HAMMAH.NO NOISES EVER!!!!Lol

I have had more problems with square taper BB's then most :(. Not to beat a dead horse, but from what I understand greasing spindle is a bad idea, and it makes sense why you shouldn't. Next time will definitely stick to external BB's.

I've had square taper setups that never creaked. I think the problem I'm having is due to the plating on the spindle. The old spindle was not plated, super cheap, but the new BB is nicer, Interloc Racing, with a nicely plated spindle. Next time I have it out of the bike I'll try roughing it up with some sandpaper. Although, I took some square taper BBs out of some old bikes and the spindles didn't have a scratch on them despite being well used. They were Shimano BBs, a UN72 and a UN91, with pretty plated spindles. The UN91 was in a "duraluminum" Alan cyclocross bike from the mid-90s and it creaked like crazy. I think it was due to the softness of the frame. |
