jimmy johns = brakeless deliveries?
 

I'm only familiar with one jimmy johns located in downtown raleigh, nc. But I've noticed that several of their delivery riders use brakeless fixed gear bikes. I have no problems with this, but I can imagine several scenarios wherein legal problems may occur for JJ.
I've also noticed the riders run red lights, weave around cars, etc. Again, I don't mind that type of riding as long as it doesn't create traffic problems that otherwise wouldn't occur. I've considered contacting the JJ manager, I doubt he knows what a brakeless bike looks like. But I'm not inclined to act on things that don't directly affect me. Right?

For some, I actually ride my bikes faster w/ a brake, less guessing.

Actually, after reconsidering, I wouldnt want dirty, brakeless hipsters delivering me mainstream sandwiches. Not only is it somewhat ironic, but who knows what manner of sabotage they could carry out upon those sandwiches. Oh the bastards!

Today I was like 6 inches from being right-hooked by a Dominoes pizza driver. *shrug* Not much you can do.

Put yourself in a car drivers place. The light turns green before you get to it, you cruise through and wham take out a rider. Hmmm, he's working for JJ. Hey, no brakes on the bike. Okay, JJ will pay for the my car damage and his med bills, cool!

There are lots of silly things to worry about in the world.

Their sandwiches aren't really that good, just fast. And I'm not "worried" about it, just observant, and bored.

There are so many better options. Today for example there was a real-deal down east NC barbq stand set up not 200' from JJ's, sandwiches for $5, made from free range grass fed organic happy pigs, etc., yet there was a line out the door of JJs. No clue.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it's a real problem in your area.

As far as the Brakeless riding goes, on a Fixed Gear, it really isn't an issue. I ride fixed, and the only time I ever use my brake is on a long downhill if I don't want to hold my speed with back pressure on the pedals. I can stop faster using the rear wheel and a skid or using controlled back pressure on the pedals than I can with the brakes. Consider the fact that they are very experienced riders, doing it messenger style. The only real risk is to themselves.

By the way, this 51 year old races them on Purdue campus all the time and at the worst, I keep up and often leave 'em in the dust. :p

JJ bike delivery guys at the JJ on State Street in Madison WI ride brakeless. Or at least two of the bikes / guys I see the most do. They seem to do quite well. Pretty cool guys to talk to when I go get my sandwiches too btw.

JJ delivery guys are great, they buy all my used parts in cash from CL

don't worry about it they're not riding your bike, they're not hurting you. mind your own business and order from a different sandwich shop if it's keeping you up at night.

there are countless members of this forum who can and do ride safely without brakes on a daily basis. i also see idiots who nearly kill themselves because they don't know how to properly stop their brakeless kilos on the way to the meat hook on an almost daily basis. don't worry about it.
