700 25 vs 700 35

My bike has been experiencing many pinch flats lately on my way to and from work. Although I think I have solved the problem by just adding 20 more psi than recommended, I want to move up to fatter tires for peace of mind. My question is how much of a difference in speed will I feel by moving to more fatty tires. And will my wheel even hold a 35?

vw addict 06-29-11 08:16 AM

better yet will your frame/brakes fit 35's?

Qwerser 06-29-11 08:17 AM

Not running brakes, but the frame will.

Try 28's and pump your tires up before every ride.

Well the reason why I'm jumping to 35 is because I went dumpster diving behind our local bike shop and found plenty of 35 tires. Completely flawless and my friend found a 25 gator skin too. Also I think knobbies would look cool on my bike cause nobody else has knobbies around here.

best dumpster dive ever.

you should just run the 35s if your frame clears them. if you're just running around town it will be better and any speed loss is mostly in your head. you'll notice it but it's just you getting lazy.

Cool

I made this switch a few months ago and I don't feel a significant speed difference. With knobbies you will feel a speed difference.

I run 35s in the spring/fall, they are great. I kind of miss them right now.

Do bike shops usually just carelessly toss tires like that? If so..... hmmm

They probably have some incredibly big flaw that might not be easy to see. I wouldn't ride tires I got in a dumpster behind a bike store...

Yeah there is probably a reason they aren't trying to sell them cheap to get rid of them.

The old bike coop pulled tons of awesome stuff from the lbs dumpster... best one I remember were some vintage campy hubs... tons of parts that get "upgraded" just go into the dumpster.

It's possible they were cracked. I saw the same thing and then noticed a hair line crack down the shell of the bearings

I know at my shop we would never throw anything out we could make a few bucks off, but I can't say the same for all. At one point I had 30 brand new Kenda 700x25 tires from a spec problem on a specific model of bike. The manufacturer replaced the mistake, and I sold all the tires off for $5 a piece, went into the shop beer fund.

A high end shop here donated LOTS of old Campy 9 speed stuff to the co-op, and some old stems, pedals etc. Good stuff.
