Spot Coyote SS hub question

I recently picked up a Spot Coyote fixie/SS, and have a question about a odd noise from the rear hub. When I'm pedaling (with the flip flop hub on the single speed side) everything runs smoothly. When I coast, I hear a soft grinding sound coming from the hub. It's not making the sound the entire 360', but maybe for a quarter of each turn.

I have the chain tension adjusted (approx. 1/2" up/down movement) and the wheel centered between the chainstays. Any ideas on the cause of the noise?

take the chain off and pedal while supporting yourself against a wall. if it doesn't make noise then you know it's not pedals, cranks, or bb. Doesn't answer but can help isolate

Seeing as it only does it while coasting, most likely the noise is coming from the freewheel.

i had a spot brand ss mtb a while back that i liked a lot, very well-built & reliable.
@GSH - could you please post more about your ride impressions of your bike once you get your freewheel problem straightened out?
good luck...

I have put the bike on my repair stand, and it's definitely coming from the freewheel. Forgot to say, the Coyote is the chain model (they also make a belt drive version).

The Spot is really nice. It's priced similar to other fixie's/SS's, has a bare 4130 frame that's clear coated, has Spot's Kobe dropouts that make taking the rear wheel off truly easy (as I've taken the rear wheel off to change the chainring, 48T was just too tall). The geomety is nice for a SS. Nothing else creaks or makes noises. I use this bike as a grocery getter / getting around the neighborhood bike as I have a LaPierre road bike and Santa Cruz mtn. bike for those tasks. A co-worker of mine has a Spot SS belt drive 29'er mtn bike and likes it a lot! Big difference is that the Coyote is made in Taiwan and my friends 29'er is welded up in Colorado, but the quality of my Taiwan frame is right up there.

This was on the day I assembled it. The only thing I've changed are the pedals, switched to some Answer Rove pedals - much better.

I've got the belt driven version on it's way to me from Hucknroll. Should have it early this coming week. Can't wait to see that raw frame finish in person and test out the new Gates Center Track belt drive.
