Question for people with mavic ellipse wheels

Hi,

Im thinking of getting a set of these. I need a wheel that has a braking surface and im getting mixed responses by different online shops, some are saying i can run a front brake with no problem and others are saying no i cant as they are a track wheel only. Can anyone here with a set of ellipses answer the question for me?

Also, if they arent brake compatable then can anyone suggest an aero stiyle wheel with braking surface that i could run for about the same price as the mavics?

Cheers

Mick

Yeah, they have a machined braking surface. Its anodized, but after a couple of good stops, you'll wear off the coloring. I have seen plenty of people do it.

Is a novatec hub a formula rebrand?

I think those rims are available both machined and non-machined.

They are only available in one configuration (although the design changed slightly in 2011). If you see some that look machined, its because someone has been using them with brakes.

Oh, and the legal disclaimer:

Use: for track bike use only. Any other use (such as on a road bike, tandem,
cyclo-cross bike, or off-road use...) is highly inadvisable, is the sole responsibility of the user and voids the Mavic warranty.
Recommended maximum weight of the cyclist and equipment: 100 kg.

My 2004 ellipses had a braking surface. It wasn't rubbed off by previous owner trying. They were literally machined for brakes.
Not sure about the latest 2011's.

cheers for the replies, seems like there is still some confusion then, especially if mavic state that warranty is void. Can anyone recommend any other nice rims, preferably aero style, carbon would be sweet if i could afford them lol

There is no confusion. These rims will work fine as road rims.

Didn't mean to scare you off with the "lawyer" statement. And, Mavic would have to prove a cause and effect to void your warranty (i.e. they can't blame a defective hub on you using brakes, but may weasel out of rim issues).

Personally I don't worry about it, and most people don't either. The rims are clearly machined for brakes - the rims themselves are likely based on one of their road rims anyway. I see plenty of people using these rims on the road, even though mavic says track use only. They are tough and strong for the road, much like a velocity (although with 20-24 spokes, I wouldn't be carrying panniers or use for a rider much over 200lbs)

I use mine on the road.

yes, they will work for daily riders. They're very strong. search ellipses and you'll find a lot of information pointing to it.

Yes they will assuming the Charge Plug has 120mm rear spacing and 100mm fork spacing which I am 99.9% certain it does. If you have further questions please start a new thread.
