sugino messenger bottom bracket - left side does not screw in all the way
sugino messenger bottom bracket 68x103 on a kilo tt deluxe. the left size only screws in about half way... the right side fits snug. not enough threading in the housing. is this normal?

The adjustable cup on the left side should screw in so it is nearly flush with the BB shell, maybe at the most 1-2mm outside the shell. If not, the threads may be tapped badly beyond that point or it may have been cross-threaded during insertion. Can you post a photo ?

It looks like the threads on the cup are messed up. It's definitely not all the way in. The inside of the cup should be flush with the bottom bracket cartridge.

I know where you're going with this, but even if the BB is secure, the crank arm will probably rub on the cup and won't tighten properly.

i grabbed the cup from my other bike and that one fails to screw in all the way too... could this be bad threading inside the housing?

take the cup out and feel the threads. Also tape? Grease man, grease. Take the tape out and try it.

If the spindle is indeed tight, you may need a spacer on the drive side

Incorrect. That would just move the BB the wrong way. The BB is positioned correctly. That is not the problem.

non drive cups will stick out from the BB in some cases, but not that much. If the cups are bottoming out on the spindle there is a different issue.

Maybe. Cups can vary among manufacturers and different models. That kinda looks like the cup on a Sugino BB-7420, which is what is used on a Messenger, but I can't say for sure. Why don't you just take the BB unit to the lbs with you and see if they can match it. Also, while you are having the BB threads in the frame retapped, also have them face the right (drive) side so the cup flange will sit flush.

The BB threads probably just need to be chased. Your LBS should be able to fix this for you.
