Hey Scrod, I am in the process of building up a kilo tt, and need some advice on a head set. I'm looking to spend no more than about $50-60 and have a couple in mind,IRD technoglide, Ritchey logic, cane creek sas, or shimano pro rm-01. Could you please tell me which of those you'd recommend...and if there is anything else that might be better than those at the same price point. Thanks for your input

The FSA Orbit X and IRD TechnoGlide are my favorites in that price point.

I love my technoglide if it helps.

Hey Scrod, if you had to replace the standard external bottom bracket on the Andel Deluxe track cranks
http://www.retro-gression.com/produc...-crankset-w-bb

What would you recommend as a cost effective replacement that would be as good/better?

What's wrong with the one it comes with?

NDS has a lot of resistance as compared to the DS which has become significantly looser since I've had it.

Just wanted to know what I should look into if I decide to replace it somewhere down the line.

Scrodzilla 10-06-12 05:07 PM

Unless you want to shell out big bucks for a Sram Ceramic (which is stupid, imo) or Phil Wood, you could always just replace it with a standard Sram GXP BB.

No difference between shimano external and sram gxp?

Scrodzilla 10-06-12 05:30 PM

The spindles are not compatible between Shimano Hollowtech and GXP.

Correctly me if I'm wrong then, but doesn't the Andel deluxe have a shimano bottom bracket?

Scrodzilla 10-06-12 05:35 PM

Oh ****...maybe it does have a Shimano-compatible BB. In that case, GXP is out.

I'll have to investigate when I get back to the shop on Monday.

No worries, I have the on-one version of it (all other things being identical), so from what I read, it's "shimano compatible".

Cantis are mildly annoying and typically don't have as much stopping power as a caliper.

I've never had much trouble keeping calipers centered.

When I read this, I thought to myself "I don't usually mind working on them", then today, I had to set up some cyclocross cantis and I wanted to kill myself the whole time.

Yeah, I think you're right. I never really put any thought into whether the spindle/BB was Shimano or Sram.

It's funny, I did a tune up on a cross bike this afternoon and was dreading changing the cables. It was easy as pie and they gave me absolutely no trouble.

:lol:Nice, I'd just never set up brakes like that from scratch so it was a strange thing.

Scrodzilla 10-06-12 05:59 PM

I've found that using a "4th hand" tool usually only makes it harder.

****, I hate that tool. I don't even own one anymore.

:lol: Sometimes I find it to be really handy, and the rest of the time, it is a royal pain in the ass.

I'm imagining you getting pissed at it one day and sending it the way of your printer.

Scrodzilla 10-06-12 06:09 PM

Jesus, that ****ing printer. Hahaha! I wish I had that on video. Angie's non-reaction was priceless.

The last time I used the 4th hand, I got really frustrated and just threw it in the trash.

I hated mine. I hate working on calipers too. I hate working on anything brake related, really. The only part I like is inserting the cable through the housing, and putting on the ferrules, dunno why.

Only time I've found a fourth hand to be useful is when setting up straddle hangers for old center pulls.

I'll be going with centerpulls when I convert the Fuji to 650b. I am NOT looking forward to it.

Oh, and on a related note... where can I find a cable hanger for use with a threaded headset that doesn't have a whole ton of flex? Fork mount is not an option, for various reasons.

anymore updates on the Windsor?

Kinkikowboi 10-06-12 09:33 PM

Hi Scrod, just recently bought a Cinelli Mash which has a 68mm bb shell. The frame came with a Phil Wood bb JIS with a square taper and 108 mm (got it measured from lbs, they said 108mm) spindle. I would prefer to keep the bb instead of buying a new one, do you know any cranksets that can support that bb? Or would it be better for me to find a crankset and then find the bb that fits. I did a search and found Vuelta Pista Track but got bad reviews for 108 mm and it uses ISO instead.

Or maybe the lbs measured wrong and it really isn't 108 mm? Ack, maybe I need to check it again. Numerous google searches can't tell me what cranksets are compatible with a JIS 108 mm.

Would it be ok if I run a crankset that required 107 mm or 110 mm? I know I'm supposed to keep the chainline within 40.2 mm to 42 mm according to Sheldon Brown. Would having a crankset that required a 107 mm give me a chainline of 43 mm? Is that how it works? /bb noob

Scrodzilla 10-06-12 11:28 PM

Phil Wood doesn't make a 108mm JIS BB. I'd bet it's ISO.

http://shop.mashsf.com/products/phil...axle-108mm-iso

FWIW, the Vuelta Pista crankset isn't very good.

I'll do some looking.
