which is a more quiet ride? your fixie or your freewheel?
this is my take on it. fixies are inherently more quiet than freewheels. this is because when you coast on a freewheel, there's all this ticking noise. no such ticking noise on a fixie.
while pedalling, drivetrain is louder because of more moving parts. also, shifting on a multi-geared bike makes noise as well.
not to say that all fixies are more quiet than freewheels, but i think this is generally true.
as a matter of fact, this is one reason i love riding my fixie.

I'm not the one who voted freewheel, but I do have a bike that has silent freewheel action. It is stealthy.

I only own Fixie. And no, I won't buy a freewheel bike just to test!
However--
I've owned freewheelermajigs, and the fixie is way quieter. It's as silent as those black helicopters that are always F****** following me around.

They are both quiet, even though my freewheel is crazy loud(phil) when coasting. The thing is, I'm so used to riding fixed that I'm always pedaling, even when I don't have to.

all my bicycles are very quiet when pedaling. i recently put a new-old suntour winner 6-speed freewheel on my road bike, and while it is louder than **** when coasting, it is remarkably quiet when pedaling. this i attribute to the nuovo record derailleur and friction shifter setup, which makes for excellent alignment. it seems like it's the 8 and 9 speed cassettes, with their index shifting, that often scrape and grind and generally make a fuss.
a well-lubed chain also helps.
