brake - unless you want to spend a lot, get this >>> https://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1753
flip the stem - no
slam the stem - no
other - level the saddle and lose the white chain
Otherwise, that's a very nice looking bike.

I've been lurking these threads for a while after having not posted in a long time. I was dead set on buying a regular track bike and riding at the velodrome when I'm one to chicago next year, but lately I've been really enjoying just riding for fun. Have ridden a friends Vilano frame with random other bits and pieces on it, and really enjoyed it. The Pake's and Soma's look like quality frames for a great price. I will no doubt be on a budget as I am now, my only concern is, how is the build quality of these bikes? I want steel as it's heavier, because I'm a heavier guy (230ish) and I want to do my own build. Can anyone chime in on that particular aspect of these brands? The other route I'm considering is a Globe Roll, but these Pake and Soma frames are much sexier.

Soma's build quality is really nice especially for the price. It's made from heat treated tange prestige steel which is actually lighter than a lot of cheaper aluminum frames. My 57cm frame was 4.25 lbs. Somas are also hand welded and made in Taiwan, which although it's asian made, it's much better than bikes made in mainland china. If you can find a Soma dealer I'd encourage you to check out a bike in person. I haven't ridden or researched much on pakes.

No, it's fully butted and much lighter. Also, it's better tubing and the dropouts are much nicer.

Buddy of mine is a courier down in Boston and he's been riding a Pake for something like 5-4 years now with absolutely no issues. He loves the frame and passed on a screaming deal when I said I could get him a better frame (closeout Rush from a local distributor) for cheap money.

Pake's are definitely great every-day bash-around bikes. They ride well, are designed well, and last forever. The costs savings from their use of straight-gauge cro-mo makes the frames a touch heavier, but also affordable enough to be work bikes. I'd probably choose a Pake if I spent all day locking my bike to stuff all over the city.

Heres one I built for a customer, now a friend, who got hit by a car on his Kilo TT, and decided to upgrade. I hadn't yet trimmed his steer tube.

Yes they are. I must be honest, they are one of my favorite cranks out right now and I sell them when I can.

Here's the rear wheel I just laced up for my Rush:
IRO (Formula) 32H fixed/fixed hub with long axle for spacing out to 130mm dropouts
Velocity 32H Deep-V rim
Sapim 2.0/1.5/2.0 butted spokes with 14mm brass nipples, laced 3X
Weight including track nuts but no rim strip is 2.33 lbs.

Today I ordered a Pake 75 Aluminum frame and fork in 51cm for $299 through my distributor. It should be here in a week and I will post a full parts list and review. An interesting note: The 51cm size has a horizontal TT and the 53cm has a sloping TT.

My thoughts as well. Especially with formula hub too - not that they're super heavy but they're not exactly the lightest. Those highly butted spokes must make a big difference.
