Nashbar SS frame build

Hey guys I bought the Nashbar SS Nekkid frame since it had good reviews, low price, and seems like a good bang for the buck.

Anyways I thought I would use this thread to post my pictures for anybody who is interested in the build-up. This bike will be for my cousin's husband.

The frame is 6061 double butted Al and the welds are a bit wide but it doesn't bother me too much. The reviews were light, responsive, stiff but the test ride when its finished will hopefully put truth to that. The frame came in a matte dark purple and it's currently at the shop getting a sparkling silver coat.

I've polished up an old SR road crank and seat post and they came out pretty nice (thanks to the DIY thread). I've got a Thomsen stem, Soma bullhorns, FSA headset, Brooks B17, and I've got a set of polished silver Weinmann wheels coming pretty soon.

Anyway, the pictures:

Frame:

Some of the parts:

So I've got most of the parts already, just need a few small parts. Once the frame is finished I will update on the assembly.

Feel free to ask questions and advice is welcomed.

I'm surprised this thread got completely ignored. I was eyeing up that frame a week ago when looking at budget build options and am interested to see how it looks built up with those components. I'm guessing goooood.

A nice start to the budget build, but why the new expensive components on a low end frame?

And if he should ever get sick of the frame or want something nicer, he'll already have decent components.

Looks like a good build. I bought it and I've had it for several months now and it's treated me pretty well. Hard to beat $99 lol

Oh, one more thing - how'd you go about polishing the seat post and cranks? They look pretty good and I have some parts that could use a bit of cleaning up!

Oh good there's some interest, I'll post some pics of the wheels tomorrow.
I'm still waiting on the frame as the shop is backed up (they primarily work on ATV's, dune buggies, motorcycles). It's only 75 for a strip and coat so I'm giving some slack on how long they're taking.

Correct.
I landed the stem for 30something from some website posted in the "the great deal" thread. It only came in 25.4 so that's why I picked up those Urban Pursuits. Urban Pursuits do come in 31.8 also.

They're not too expensive. Some of the stuff I already had, the seatpost and crank are from an old road bike, tires were free as an extra on a craigslist deal.
The only expensive parts that I splurged on were the Brooks saddle I got for 90, and the weinmann wheels for 130 (this price is relative to the build, for a higher-end bike 130 would be cheap), and the paint shop in lieu of just rattle canning it (did that before and was not satisfied with durability). But I would love to throw these on a killer vintage track frame. Most likely a build I will do next year.

Good to hear,

The frames are even cheaper now, I've seen it hovering as low as $60 within the past few weeks, I got mines for a total of about 95 or so - they had a 20% off day and shipping was about 18.
Another thing I noticed is that Nashbar raises all their prices when they have those 20% weekends, lol. The same frame went from 60 to 80 during their last 20% period.

I put them in a bucket and sprayed oven cleaner to remove the old coat. Wet sanded the rough areas and scratches. Then I spent a lot of time polishing them up with metal polish.
There's a more detailed description with photos in the DIY thread. I did a quick search and I couldn't find it but I suspect a more thorough search would pull something up.
I think I took pics of my process, will check tomorrow or so. But yeah I probably spent 3 to 4 hours polishing, I did it while watching a movie and listening to music - time passes quicker that way.

Here are the wheels:
Origin 8 hubs, DP18 rims, Wolber SL19 700x19. I've never ran these tires before so it's a bit of a mystery as of now.

Here is the front wheel modelin' on my Tommasini.

Lookin good so far!

Just a protip about multi-quoting: See the little speech bubble icon with a plus next to it by the reply with quote button? If you toggle that on every post you want to reply to then click "reply with quote" on the final one you want to reply to it will allow you to respond to all the quotes with one post.

Niiice. I love those bikes, both old and new. There was a 2010 Tecno frameset in my size on Ebay Auction that I salivated over for the 6 days it was up. I thought of ways to raise the cash but the bidding went to high for me. It sold for a grand. Still a deal as these new framesets are around 2300.

Where did you get your Origin 8(Formula?) hub/DP18 wheelset? I like the silver set up, most places seem to have black hubs in their offerings, and that's a pretty good price too.

What fork will you be using?

Origin 8hub to Polished Silver DP18 rim was purchased from Ebay. Yeah I'm digging the polished silver. The price fluctuates from 130 to 150.
As for the fork I originally planned on using a carbon road fork I had but then I changed plans for a chrome fork to keep it lookin classy.
I searched for a chrome 1-1/8 track fork online and by word of mouth but couldn't find anything on the cheap. Soma has one that I wanted but it's like 120 or so. So I went with a heavy-a$$ 1-1/8 threadless chrome steel road fork from Nashbar. I'm still gonna keep a look out for a chrome track fork though.

https://www.retro-gression.com/produc...803-steel-fork I don't know what offset you need for a fork, but this comes in chrome.

Some more parts:

Nashbar fork. I wanted chrome 1-1/8 and threadless and under $80 so this is what I found. I would have preferred a classic curve to the straight blade but this still looks great.

got a great deal on the Sylvan pedals. generic strap and clip I already had. Izumi 3/32" chain.
