Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I was doing some unrelated research and stumbled upon this.

A powder coating forum specific to bikes.

These are all powder jobs, not wet paint.

Nice bike that Nagasawa.

I'm always amazed though by guys that are truly hard core into bikes, but still refer to anything shiny and silver as chrome.

I had no idea there was such a thing.....

1908 Sears, Roebuck & Co rail bike fittings
. The whole kit was $7.70.

A modern version could weigh almost nothing and you could cross the country and never get a flat.

It's rad but obviously the whole "train vs. bicycle" thing comes to mind...

Yep. I'm thinking a mirror would be a good idea.

Realistically, how quickly could one yank this setup off the tracks in the case of a rapidly approaching Amtrak or freight train?

I guess it would depend on the weight and the strength of the rider. All those tubes could be super light since they don't bear a load. The wheels could be nylon or plastic.

Probably couldn't do it in these liability paranoid modern times anyway. You'd get busted for trespassing or some other horrible crime.

Even worse, you'd get the boxcar jumpers calling you a hipster.
