Older Monocog
Older Monocog
I picked up an older Redline Monocog frameset at a swap meet last weekend and was pretty excited about building it up until I realized it has an odd dropout spacing of about 116mm. Thing is, I 've got a Surly wheelset I had hoped to use on it. What are my options? Is it feasible to coldset it? Is there a decent rear wheel or hub available for an older Monocog?

saying you have a surly wheelset means nothing. surly makes hubs 120-135. what is your hub size? as stated, i wouldn't worry about wedging a 120mm hub into that frame.

The Surly wheelset I have is 135mm flip/flop and I thought these frames were spec'd that way.........but maybe some of the earlier ones were not.

if its a steel frame, you can respace it yourself.

Sounds like the frame has already been respaced (or it was bent). Monocogs were 110 (BMX spacing) through 2004. In 2005 they changed the spacing to 135, which is the MTB standard. They were never 116mm.
I have a 2004 Monocog that I still ride. I built a 110 mm rear wheel for it using a BMX racing freehub.
For your frameset I would probably just shove a 120 mm track hub in there. Spreading the dropouts an additional 2mm each side is nothing. Or you could reset it to 135. Some of the older monocogs are aluminum. You do not want to respace an aluminum frame.

Ya, 110mm sounds more conceivable. Just from eyeballing it, it looks like it was spread if anything. Previous owner probably tried to force a bigger hub in there. I had a vague recollection of the rear spacing on these being different but could'nt put a number on it. Thanks mihlbach

Disregard my earlier comment. I thought he was going from 120 to 116, which is nothing. I wouldn't go from 135 to 110.

I didn't mention it earlier, but in addition to a SS wheel based on a BMX racing freehub for my older Monocog, I also built another rear wheel with a Surly front disc hub for fixed offroad riding. The tight 110 mm spacing works really well with a front disc hub. No pictures right now, but maybe I can add some later if you're interested.
