660 in 6 days on a geared bike. from orlando fl to birmingham al,

used to ride across florida 125 miles every few weekends.

from fairfield, ca to the pac coast. is about 3-4 hours on a tri bike, best not to think about the miles.
I hang out on the long distance forum to.

I have to go from birmingham, al. to atlanta, ga. about 160 mi. in the spring to pick up a package I think. still up in the air on that.

and also debating setting aside a few months once my lease is up to ride my bike across country. don't know yet, will have to talk it over with my apt manager so i have a place to go home to.

It'd actually only take about a month (assuming a little less than a century per day). Would you do a payed tour (support and lodging, etc), or all by yourself?

On either single or fixed my longest is a century ride. I did the Seattle Tour de Cure a few years ago on my FG and it's just over 100 miles with about 6000' of climbing. I've done a couple other century rides on my singlespeed rigs.

On my geared bike my longest is 253 miles in a single day. 3 years ago I rode the Baker Lake 400k route with the Seattle Randonneurs (24h 30m finish time) and in 2010 I rode the Bellingham 400k and finished in 24h.

I have done the century a day thing before, and I would like to factor in rest days and stuff, and time to enjoy scenery and people. So I would be out to enjoy myself more than anything. last time I was out on an extended ride, I ran into someone going in the other direction. He told me something important.

"it will be there when I get there, enjoy yourself"

I am a couch surfer and on warm showers.com, So odds are there would be lots of free loading and staying in others homes for a night or two. I would rather solo it. I know lots of people in different places cross country.

I mostly just use my bike to commute, but my longest ride is 70miles. I wouldn't mind doing some more lengthy ones, but I need padded shorts and butter for that. My plain compression shorts weren't cutting it very well past 40 miles. Kinda spent two days riding very little after to heal the chafe

I'm trying to remember my longest. I want to say 130ish on a fixed gear.

I have an ambitious goal of attempting a quad metric this year.(Won't be on a fixed gear though.)

I plan on riding east-west cross country (USA) this summer after I graduate. I know this is the wrong forum, but since I only post here, any suggestions? Besides doing more distance riding. My father did this back in 1972 (without any prior preparation) so I figure I could do the same.

Fixed or geared?

Find a set of tires that will last. Start planning your route now.

If I get another bike, I will be riding geared. If not, it will be single speed. I plan to take US route 20, just because it is scenic and has a decent shoulder for the duration of the route. Tires would be my second or third investment (after the actual bike, if monetary constraints allow) right after a good set of panniers (Spelling?).

EDIT: I would prefer to travel on a geared bicycle. I apologize for any bad grammar, Ecuadorian liquor may have decreased my ability to communicate effectively.

Also plan accordingly, prepare for any kind of weather, plan out where you are going to stop for the night. Figure out a bailout plan if something goes horribly wrong when you are already way past the point of no return.

Thank you Dan for all the words of wisdom. My father has given me some good advice as far as places to stay and how to camp in most climates. If I really need a place to stay in a pinch, I can stay at many funeral homes in the midwest and rockies (I have an uncle and a grandfather that sell Batesville caskets...). What I lack is a backup plan for if my bike totally craps out. It is something I need to look into. Have you ever done a cross US ride? You seem to be quite knowledgeable.

I was in the planning stage, but a certain little health issue won't let me be gone for a period longer than a month(blood clot/blood thinners, have to be checked every month to see if the blood is too thick or thin.

I am truly sorry to hear that you were inhibited by your health. I am honestly in the most preliminary stages of planning my trip. I actually mistyped my initial post. I could possibly graduate this spring, but it is most likely that I will graduate in the following december. If that is the case, the weather would render my plans useless, but I am keeping my options open at the moment. In either case, I need to head west as fast as possible, though I would prefer to sell my car and have the experience of riding my bike. Riding would also have the added benefit of decreasing the amount of crap I own, since I would not be able to carry more than a third of it with me.
