Over chain lubrication.
 

I was wondering if to much oil on chain would cause a failure like I had yesterday that resulted in me breaking my scapula and needing surgery to fix it (out for 4 months!). I installed the KMC SL 1/8 chain the day before and forgot to wipe off the excess oil. When I took it for a ride yesterday, I noticed when I accelerated the chain felt like it was skipping/draggin.
I went to pass a roadie and stood up in my drops, heard a pop and ate pavement; no helmet and luckily it was my shoulder that was smashed (helmet wearer from now on). Bike flew into the woods, and upon inspection just 2 scratches no dents etc, and the chain was still on the cogs; nothing looks like it would cause such a critical failure. Today I'm looking at the chain and when I touched it the cogs and chain are soaked in oil. Now would this over oiling cause this to happen? Thanks in advance, and here are some pics of the break.

Excess oil can't cause your chain to derail or break....even if it was dripping with oil, its not going to cause your chain to fail. I doesnt sound to me like the chain was at fault. It didn't break or derail. Maybe something, like a rock or chunk of metal got jammed into your drive chain, causing damage to your cog chainring and/or chain. Did you check you bike thoroughly to make sure it wasn't something else that broke? Its possible you popped a spoke, or your chainstay cracked in half...thats happened to me before, although it didn't cause a crash. Check your bike very carefully before you ride it again.

That's one nasty shoulder break.....heal fast!

The bike is fine. During my warm up before I go full speed, I noticed the chain making the changing gear noise and dragging type feeling in the clips. Then when I engaged full speed it souded like the chain snapped, but nothing is wrong with the chain or bike. It wasnt a stick or rock as I focus on the ground ahead when I engage in the drops.

chek your cog and lockring if loose they may create a sensation of slipping when you pedal hard

how tight was your chain? I had a similar noise once when my rear axle wasn't tight enough and my wheel moved a little fwd (causing tons of chain slack)

I can't make heads or tails of those pictures. To me, it looks like frozen puddles on the road.

Chain is nice and tight, with the right amount of slack.

Found the culprit. The lock-ring was so loose I could take it off just with my fingers. Friend said, he thinks the rear cog tightened/locked up as the lock-ring came loose and that's what I heard pop. Sometimes it takes a break to realize checking everything on your bike before doing fast long distance runs is a great idea, and a helmet is not a bad idea.

how are the threads on your hub after that? what lockring were you using btw? I had problems with one slipped a lot on account of not being able to get my cog on there as tight as it should be. luckily I'm a ***** so when something feels weird when I leave, I do a few circles and stops around my block to make sure it doesn't happen again. I bet you will too now :p

That's some ****ty luck. How long ago was the cog installed?

I installed it about 6 months ago. It was loose about 2 weeks ago I just forgot to re-tighten it, as I usually ride my Trek.

All kidding aside, did the roadie laugh at you or help you pull yourself together?

Having a hard time understanding what happened. The rear cog was loose and then when you stood up it tightened and threw you?

Yeah, it seems as though my torquing power tightened the cog which was not tightened all the way down, and when it tightened with my force it caused a snap like reaction which threw me.
As someone that can take a lot of pain, around a 9 on a 10 point scale. Even with all the nice pain meds, every little movement or slight bump makes it to the top of my pain list.
