Your favorite track group..
I'm considering campy cranks (though not the hubs) and am wondering what peoples opinion are of other groups.
I'm looking from a Durability/appearance/cost perspective (importance in that order) and am wondering what the masses here have experienced and think work best. |
stay away from campy hen in my opinion. Too much cost involved.
Make your own group. Sugino 75 cranks Surly Hubs (mmm...I loves 'em!) Velocity Deep V rims OR MA3s Izumi chain Cart. bearing headset - FSA has a few good ones. Shimano BB, cart bearing. Save $ and be more durable. Race Face too. Smooth. but you going the full gruppo route? Miche is good 'cept their hubs are not street (see Hammye's comments for more info) |
I picked up Shimano Sora 165s from Harris Cyclery and have had zero problems in 12 months of riding. I don't claim they are the best. Although they are cheap at $60 or $65 brand spanking new and they've been problem free.

No longer available, but the Suntour Superbe Pro track stuff is amazing. Otherwise, Dura-Ace is nice, but they no longer sell the hubs as a high flange. Grrrrrrrrrr.
Piece together the good stuff from various outfitters and make it your track group. |
I'm in favor of mix-n-match, especially from a durability standpoint. From your posts it sounds like you do some pretty hard street riding, so why not tailor your component choices to your riding style. Unless you think your Thylacine deserves no less than the complement of a full gruppo. I like my Miche, especially from a cost standpoint, but the jury's still out on durability. I am breathing easier since Hammye admitted to having had the older, non-cartridge bearing hubs fail.

for durability/looks where cost is not an issue:
cranks: campy record pista. they're absolutely amazing in every way imaginable. BB: phil. hubs: phil. rims: cxp33, or open pro. although i think my next wheelset will be with sun venus aero rims, just to try them out. headset: hatta NJS. pedals: MKS sylvan. where cost is a determining factor: cranks: sugino 75 just as tough (if not tougher than the campys it's all pretty much the same at that level though) BB: shimano UN53 hubs: phil. cannot go wrong with spending a little extra where it counts, but if you really want to save some, the surlys are just fine...i just keep meeting people who are like "yeah, i bought the surlys, but i really wanted phils, so i'm gonna upgrade when i have the money." if you want phils, save money for a little longer and sacrifice riding the bike for that much longer and get the phils. they're worth it. to me, it's not worth comprimising something if you're not gonna be happy with the end product. rims: same as above headset: tange levin (the $24.95 one is pretty sweet). pedals: MKS sylvan. $20-$30. can't go wrong for the quality. get the bike you want. |
C Record groupo (large flange)

here are the components i'm using to build my de bernardi:
sugino 75 cranks phil bb phil high flange hubs mavic open pro rims chris king headset mks custom nuevo pedals |
i think you should make up your own group. if you're going to be using this as your main bike, i would go with something more durable; considering most track stuff is unsealed.
i think campagnolo pista cranks are the best looking cranks on earth. that said, i would go with the sugino 75's so the money you would save could go towards sealed hubs and bb. hubs: phil or paul bb: phil or shimano rims: sun venus, velocity deep v's or aeroheads, mavic cxp30's (if you can find them), cxp33's, open pros... |
