Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

That actually sounds pretty fun. I would only do that with a large group though.

Yo, brand new here on the Forum, and am looking for a few fixie fanatics to ride with in Costa Mesa. This thread's ancient, so I don't know who's still around, but if you wanna ride some time, gimme a shout.

I'm also working with CM City Council to start a Cyclist Awareness Program for our fine city. Anybody interested in joining forces?

Best,

Banning's Bikes in Fullerton has fixed gear equipment and their staff is friendly to fixies. They sell Pake fixies, as well as some interesting single speed cruiser/mountain bike/large bmx bikes and the assortment of beautiful geared bikes.

I'm seeing more fixed gear cyclists here in La Mirada/Whittier area lately. A girl riding a fixie was edging through traffic with a new Re:Load bag and I yelled to her, asking if she got it at Banning's Bikes in Fullerton. She did- and she yelled back her boyfriend "is really into fixed gear". so, I'm seeing more and more.

For people in Orange or in Orange County, we have a (still broken?) calender of events at:
bikeboom.com (click Orange County).
I believe I also saw flyers for fixed gear rides at "The Lab" in Costa Mesa- so I assume there are more rides in Costa Mesa now.

Does anyone know of a publicly-available orange county/ South LA calender? BikeBoom's calender has been broken for a while and LAFixed's forum reguires registration.

I don't have a fixed gear bike yet (to be remedied later this summer with the IRO group buy frame), but you'll see me around East LA around the USC med school or Union Station when i bike commute.

Don't forget the Wolfpack Hustle people either. They're having a race July 8 (i'd go but i have no team and there's a school reunion that day for me...)

OC *****es. yes, there is becoming a large fixed/single speed community here. seal beach/huntington/newport/costa mesa especially. there is a thing called "polar rollers" we have a decent amount of fixed riders getting bigger everyday, todays ride had 64 people. that "bike hipster" you prob. saw in newport beach was probably me. i ride there often, or used to.

I'm fakin' the funk on a single speed here in Long Beach. I've seen a couple different fixed guys while riding around though.
