Before and after: my single speed project complete.
It started as this: a 95 Trek 830 that was rotting away in my brothers garage. It was used and abused, but still intact. I figured it was a good starting point for a bike project:
How it looked when I first got it home:
I'd already removed the wheelset, but they are just your basic bottom of the barrel 26" wheels with a Shimano freewheel hub on the rear.
I stripped everything off the bike except for the bottom bracket. Then I cleaned, degreased, scuffed and steelwooled the whole thing. I also ground off the braze-ons for almost everything.
As I got it ready for paint I ordered/bought the following:
Bontrager Hank 26x2.2 slicks: $40
Generic fork off ebay: $10
36t BMX chainring: $16
KMC BMX chain: $6
Gusset SS kit(using 16t cog): $20
FMF 175mm cranks: $25
Red anodized chainring bolts: $5
Sette qr's: $10
Profile drop bars that I flop and chopped off ebay: $10
Sette bar tape: $5
Primo Tenderizer pedals: $30
Shimano rear brake: $15
Bontrager seat from the clearance rack at my LBS: $10
Quill to threadless stem adapter: $10
Jamis stem: free
As you can see, this was a super-budget build.
Once the frame was prepped, I sprayed it with a textured metallic paint I found at Autozone.
Anyways, here's the end result. I gotta say... I freking LOVE this bike. It weighs in at 24 pounds, but it's fast and feels tough at the same time. The 36/16 combo seems perfect for cruising around town, but I may change it as I get stronger.
Here are some pics I took after putting about 5 miles on it:
My 5 year old son insisted on me trying to be a hipster.

Be proud as you get stronger. That's just sweet. Love the red tidbits, too.

I like it but why only one brake and what happened to the brake cable guides on the top tube?

I ground off the cable guides. I always planned on routing that cable under the top tube, so they would have just looked ugly.
As for just one brake, it's more than adequate for the type of riding I'll be doing.

Just curious as to why you put the brake in the rear and not up front? I am guessing with tires like that, the thing comes to a stop pretty quickly.
