Fair price.
The internet has made shopping weird. People generally don't want to pay a fair price, they have to find a good deal. Not to say that you personally are like this, just an observation.

I'd ask for actual specs (unless the bike being advertised is completely stocked) to gauge whether or not it's worth it

Do you say this because you think the bike is bad in general, or because you think the price is high? Basically I'm looking for a cheap FG to learn/practice on while I continue to get parts for my Leader 722TS build. Would I be better off just getting something cheap from bikesdirect?

Your cog is slipping.

The Volpe is a CX bike so this is a conversion. I find it interesting none of the shots show a good picture of the back cog setup. Like, I don't think it has horizontal dropouts (I have a Volpe myself, I can double check when I get home) so there must be a tensioner or something on there? I can't tell from the pics. I'd also take a close look at the chainline, the Volpe comes with a triple chainring.
The Volpe is a somewhat heavy but good CroMo steel frame. I like mine as a tourer/commuter, though mine has all the gears. It has clearance for fenders and you could set it up with racks and stuff, so it's good for that sort of thing.

+1 on meh. Not a rip-off, but not a screaming deal, especially with no specs or pic of the rear dropout.
Look at it this way: If he'll take a used IPad, he could just get one for about $250-$300. That might signal a pretty decent amount of price flexibility. Or, if you can get your hands on a cheap used IPad...
