OK, heres the problem. I have a Specialized Stumpjummper converted to a SS. I can't get the chainline right. It looks straight and eveything lines up but under standing pedal force it skips(steel frame). I am pretty sure it is cog deflection. The only time I have the problem is when I use a tentioner. I had a old stretched chain on it and it worked without a tentioner. Well I wanted to replace the chain and ring. The chain is in between lengths. I used a half-link but it is either a 1/4" to tight or a 1/4" loose. So I was working on it today and just couldn't get it to work. So I took the tentioner off and forced the chain on. It is super tight and rough. I of course wouldn't ride it like that. Well I couldn't get the chain off because it was so tight. I loosened to rear wheel skewer and the axel fell in line and the chain tention was perfect. THe drops are very semi-horizonal. But there was enough to get the chain just right. There is still plenty of drop left under the axle. So after all this info my question is will there be a problem with the axle sitting just below the drop ends? The axle is straight and I can adjust the pads to work. Will I run into problems with the axle slipping? I have the skewer tight.

I have a similar setup on my stumjumper. My gearing is 44x16 and it works perfectly ( with a little fooling around with the axel in the dropout. What year is yours?

Do you use the 44x16 off road?
My stump is a 97.

44/16 is a lot steep for offroad (even for XC). But fortunately 40/20 should fit just as well which is a more typical offroad gear.
