Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

busted up.

so, i had my first real fixie accident last night: i rear ended a parked car while i was turning a corner. ended up with two broken teeth, various bumps and scabs, and a bent fork. hopefully i can get to the shop and use their tools to put a new fork on tomorrow. the teeth need to be fixed too, i'll have to see if the local dental school can hook up some caps.

i never realized how much broken teeth hurt. also, i can't really eat anything, so i'm gonna spend the rest of the weekend drinking.

Did the parked car cut you off or pull out in front of you?

That sounds like something I'd do! (I think I'd make an excuse why it happened, though... )

Hey, that's arright, I still like you, even with broken teeth. Which reminds me, it's funny how you talk about your fork before your teeth. Priorities. (?) Really though, I'm sorry to hear it. Have you been looked at at all? Mmm, I've chipped, but never broken, and can't even imagine! Hope you feel better.

We should start a sticky: IF INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, GO GET CHECKED OUT BY A DOCTOR! since everyone says that in an accident thread.

Rough about the teeth. I had a broken tooth, sledding with my head down in the sled and I took on a downed tree. Guess who won.

Get better. Rock on. Be excellent to one another.

I too have broken a tooth in the past. Can't imagine two. Ouch! It's one of the worst (very sharp) pains I have ever experienced. Don't dick around. Get the dentist ASAP.

Hope you get to feeling better.

Wow. Glad you're OK other than the teeth. Take care of them, it sucks not being able to eat.

I once hit a parked car on a STRAIGHT street when I was a kid delivering papers.
WHAM, and smacked my face into the basket and fell over sideways.

I had just started my route and had 40 lbs of papers.
I had already cut the cord binding the papers and they proceded to slide, one over the other, all across the road.

Not bad, funny. Feel for ya, get well.

A co-worker of mine rear ended a parked flatbed truck at exactly 36 mph. Guess how he knew his speed but not that there was a parked truck there.
Heads up all.
Sorry aout the teeth, that sounds painfull and very expensive.

one's broken almost to the root, the other's chipped at a sharp angle.

actually, i don't think i did any damage to the car, but it was 12.30am, and it took me almost fifteen minutes to find my glasses in the dark (no streetlights), so by the time i got out of there, i wasn't in any mood to survey the damage. maybe i'll go back by there later today after i get my backup fork installed.

$3000 worth of dental work after a bike wreck, that's all I wear. People look at you funny, but I've given up looking hip.
