Big Block or Langster? Need a dual purpose bike

I know both bikes are made from different materials, but i think they have similar geo. Have ridden both, both felt pretty good to me. But I'm going to test ride again before buying.

I want a bike that will allow me a few things 1) exercise (a given with any bike), 2) a means of commuting to work a very short distance away.

The criteria you listed pretty much includes every bike known to man.

jimmytango 08-27-12 10:37 PM

Yeah, you're gonna have to be more specific with your needs buddy.

Nagrom_ 08-27-12 10:40 PM

You want one with wheels though, right?

derek.fulmer 08-27-12 10:43 PM

which one will stand up to being locked up?

I'm not sure what else I need out of a single speed bike. solid frame that fits well, decent components, priced at or under $800? honestly can't think of anything else. anyone with experience with either or both bikes care to chime in on how they hold up over time?

Nagrom_ 08-27-12 10:44 PM

Kilo TT then.

save money.

not interested in BD bikes. I want to buy from a local shop, go through the fit process, etc.

Big block, no question. The top tube is a bit longer on big blocks for clearance reasons. As far as I know it will barspin a 25c.

Langsters are ugly...

solipsist716 08-27-12 11:21 PM

well, as long as it barspins!

yeaahhh...

could care less about bar spins. will have drops or pursuit bars on it any way.

jimmytango 08-28-12 12:10 AM

But, barspins! Not being able to barspin is definitely a reason to choose one bike over the other.

+1 not to mention overly flashy to easily grab the attention of hoodlums.

cc700 08-28-12 12:31 AM

also the big block is a whole metric **** ton of fun.

Xgecko 08-28-12 06:02 AM

As for the Lock up criteria the Big Block wins over the Langster on name obscurity....Speciaized says STEAL ME!!!!! All City says HUH??

hamfoh 08-28-12 06:17 AM

love my big block, can't barspin

FKMTB07 08-28-12 07:06 AM

I also love my Big Block. Really well designed frame.

bfloyd6969 08-28-12 07:31 AM

Really, with your criteria choose which ever bike looks better to you and the one you think you will like more. Specialized sure has a reputable name in the bike industry, but the Big Block is one nice bike.

derek.fulmer 08-28-12 12:59 PM

Sizing on the Big Block seems a little odd, to me. I test rode a 55 or a 56, can't remember which size. Im typically a 58. But their 58 has too long of a top tube, IIRC

FWIW - the 53 and 55 we've got in the shop won't barspin.

Must've been a 55 - they don't come in 56cm.
