What's the deal with fixed gear bikes?
What makes them better than my 24 gear bike? I haven't owned a fixie yet but see a few people having them at the bike rack where I go to school. There are a lot of hills where I live so I think a selectable gear bike is better? Am I wrong? What makes a fixed gear bike good?

Fixed gear bikes are rubbish, they're hard to ride and you can't freewheel down hills. To be honest, I don't know why anyone rides them. I'm pretty sure no one here actually rides them, we just pretend to because we want to be seen as doing something cool and different.

basically - what Tmonk said.
also, FG is good for shortish rides on mostly flat terrain, ideally. but can be (and is) regularly used for whatever the feck folks feel like using it for. bike polo, freestyle, mtb, century rides, etc.
PS- try it and find out for yourself.

People asked me the same thing when I was doing the NYC bike 75mile bike ride this past weekend. I didn't stop pedaling for 6 hours. I use fixed gear for its simplicity and fitness aspect. I enjoy going fast, especially up hill (and seeing the face of people with their legs spinning like crazy but they aren't going anywhere)

I find that russet potatoes make the best home fries, but I use red potatoes more often because they're smaller and easier to portion when cooking for one.
