brake hoods for my new road drops...suggestions!

Hi
Yes I just got these nice Easton ea70 drops that I'm really digging.
Can someone recommend me some good hoods to go along with them?
I switched from rrisers, due to needing more hand positions cause I out a lot of miles in daily
Thanks

^No problem.

Those SRAM's posted are a popular choice here. Cane Creek SCR-5's are another, and the TRP RRL's if you're ballin.

I use Tektro RL341s. Inexpensive and sort of heavy, but they have a return spring.

Yeah inexpensive sounds good to me! I'm trying the setup first, the flashy gear comes later on. I'm just rnibg until I find a setup good for me
Did you get them online or are they pretty common to find such as LBS?

Dumb question but

The brake hoods would go on before the bar type correct?
I've had bmx, mtb, and fixed. Never had road drops, so I'm not experienced with them, or installing procedure.

Also for future reference, what are return springs?

The levers have springs to keep them pushed out, so that they're not just flopping around because of not having any tension from cables.

Also looking at the Tektro RL341, a lot of the description say that it's designed for women, is this true or for those who have these. Have you noticed anything from the ordinary?

The RL341 is a smaller version of the RL340.

I also have the Tektro RL341s on my bike. The hoods on the RL341 and RL340 are the exact same, it's just the levers that are shaped differently. They feel great to me and they could be had for around $25. IIRC the SRAM s500/s900 levers don't have a return spring. just something to keep in mind

They are a bit out of the ordinary. They're supposed to be easier for small hands to operate. Like another poster said, the hoods are exactly the same as RL340.

The plastic part that houses the hinge bugs me a bit cuz it's sharp. Gonna round it off with a dremel one of these days.

1. Install levers.
2. Ride tapeless for a few days (or however long it takes you to really decide where you want them on the bar.
3. Peel back hoods
4. Tape bars
5. Put hoods back down.

Thanks everyone who's been helping out so far.

One last question though
I'm currently riding brakeless, I had a close call last night with a car making a u turn, it was enough for me to go off and get a front brake the following day for emergencies.
One thing is that I am not sure if I should have the shop install the brakes or attempt to do so myself.

Im able to do the basics on my FG
Looking at YouTube videos it doesn't seem too difficult, although I am not very mechanic savvy.

So how difficult/easy is it to install on your own? For your first time
I believe I have wire cutters and Allen wrenches

The shop wants to charge 40 bucks to install btw.

My RL340s buzz like hell when I'm at speed. I think those return springs everyone loves vibrate like crazy when they're not expanded, and it seriously makes me want to go back to risers.

i just switched the fixed gear to drops, as i REALLY enjoy the setup on my roadie. found the cane creeks (non-compact) on craigslist and jumped on 'em, hoping they'd be a lot like the 105's on the road bike. they are REALLY small-- make sure you get hoods that don't make you feel like you've got to have a death grip on 'em at all times.

Install them yourself, it's not difficult. Just don't make any sharp bends in the cable/housing and make sure the pads are positioned right.

40 bucks to install brakes is insane.

That is high. Is that brakes + levers + wrap, including some parts, like cables and bartape, perhaps?

Nope, I guess they think they just have the magic touch or somethinnn.
I did pick up the tektro rl340's though
I am currently trying to find my sweet spot for them on the drops.

The only complaint I have about them is that they seem to rattle a bit pretty easily....did you ever get them to stop striknein?

I'll take them apart when I re-wrap... I suspect it's the quick release that's causing the rattling. I think a little epoxy might do the trick.

Hello I'm reviving my thread from a Few years back.been using drops, and craving hoods again. Has anyone used the trp rrl levers? How are they? I cannot see them in person but do see a good see a good deal thanks to the internet. I'm not sure how comfortable they are because I have experience no with pretty much any hoods. Would someone be able to inform me from about the RRL?
The other alternative would be tektro rl340. Although I read that they aren't as good as the r200's were. (Apparently they changed from the campy shape a bit?) SRAM s500 are a bit too pricy. And cane creeks would the next obvious choice I just really don't like the salamanders on the hoods. Remind me of stretch marks lol
