Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

No, I don't feel awkward on a single speed. I do, however, feel awkward on bikes where the bars are several inches lower than the saddle, like most people here ride.

Nope, I usually forget the pleasure of being able to coast as I've gotten in the habit of shifting methodically in such a way that my cadence remains relatively around my sweet spot.

Nope. I learned to ride a bike on a single speed, after a few years rollin' fixed trike.

Being that neither of my bikes are geared, I feel extremely awkward when riding a geared bike.

I feel awkward all the time, my amount of gears has nothing to do with it.

Coming off a fixed, coasting and not being able to regulate my speed with my legs feels really strange and out of control.

You know those dreams you have where you are in high school and just wearing underwear? Yeah...I feel like that every time I leave the house to ride.

I will occasionally reach for downtube shifters on any road bike I ride. Even after riding ONLY the brifter rig for a good month straight. Riding along fingers resting on shifters and I reach down for the downtube.

Awkward with a capital A for sure.
