Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? whats a good gear ratio for daily commuting

i live in the san fernando valley (outter los angeles) and theres some hills not to many mostly flat
i run a 47:17 since i used to skid alot but i grew out of that faze and now im just looking for something fun to ride, fast and a good work out
i ride daily anywhere from 5-15 miles fixed, breakless. pursuit style bike.
i was thinking about going a 47-15 or 49-15 but im not sure how that would be. or even a 48-15.
any suggestions?

Retro-gression is selling one dollar cogs right now.
There are 16 & 17t cogs.
You should try out a 16 and go from there. You cant beat the $1 price.

All three of your choices are pretty significant leaps, especially brakeless. 48/49-15 on the street isn't sensible in most cases.

I'd try 48-17 or 47-16. I rode 48-17 in similar conditions for a while and it's plenty fast and fun, but I kept a front brake on.

I ride 47/17 on the street and can hold a solid 20 easy, and can sprint to 30 fine.

Welcome to the forum maldon_eddie!

This is a link to a thread we keep at the top of the page. There is lots of info there about gear ratio calculations and uses because it's a common topic and we like to keep all the info in one place. Feel free to ask more questions there!

I ride 48-17 here in vegas. I switched from 48-19 and I like the jump in gear size but we also do not have any insane hills. I also run a front brake
