Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixed gear Dubai ??

Am I the only one? Im an american (Boston) living in Dubai for a few years now I recently built up a fixie and started riding again. I think I am the only person on a bike that isnt one of thore 3 wheel ones delivering food. I ride in the city everyday (as scary as it is ) and havent seen anybody yet, I get some weird looks though.

anyone?...

I imagine that riding a bike on a city so ostentatious is not that popular

Until they found out about all the expensive parts you can get. Then you'll see lots of expensive carbon bikes being ridden to around. Happens everywhere.

They? Yeah, "they" don't know about expensive bikes. That's it.

Hot might mean that Dubai summers are said to be around 120F with ridiculous humidity such that sane people don't leave the house (or hotel) until afternoon. That also makes cycling something of a non-hobby, I'd guess.

One weird thing I learned studying abroad in central america. There are actually a ton of (and even very developed) countries that don't use addresses. Directions are just given by landmarks and mailmen either figure it out or you use a PO box.

Nice. Get there at 3am. Come alone. We will be in the back, around the corner of the building. It will be a blast!

Easy on the connotations.

re: some countries not using addresses like we are used to here in the US.

This is actually really common. For instance, very few roads in India have names. Most people describe where they live by sub-neighborhoods, districts, and landmarks. In Japan, only major roads have names, most streets do not. Streets are thought of as the spaces between blocks. Groups of blocks make up a district, blocks have numbers, and the buildings on the block have addresses that correspond to the order in which they were built, not necessarily in numerical order based on proximity to the buildings immediately to the left and right. It's wild.

Hey Evan! Dug this one out of the archives (thanks Google!)
Did you build your bike from bits you bought here?
I'm a bit novice and just started looking into fixies. I was just out at the shops in Motor City but find AED 5000 a bit rich for a bike to "peddle around town"! Admittedly the Pinarellos are pretty!
