Ya, this winter has been brutal.
The winter that I build a new bike would be the longest winter ever. It figures.

Quite tastey. The tires, they really work, but they are not whitewalls, not gumwalls, greywalls? What am I looking at.

Looks good. But I would still fail in even the slightest headwind. My legs are like a small displacement two-stroke engine, all RPM and no torque.

I run like a two stroke with a bad piston...

Even though I don't have 100% use of my left leg, I can lay down some pretty monstrous torque with my right (when I have to) and usually spin like a gerbil on crack instead of trying to mash those pedals with one good leg.

Since works been slow I've had a lot of freetime so this happened. Still on borrowed wheels but I'll get some eventually. So weird going from track bike to this, I feel like I'm losing ,control when going over 25.

Too much rake, not enough trail.

Any standard-reach caliper will work, you'll just need to get a longer recessed nut for the back and use the two serrated washers that come with the caliper in between the fork and the brake (which is their intended purpose).

Except that some front brake calipers have very short mounting bolts that don't extend far enough into the fork crown to reach the nut.

Which is precisely why I told him he'll need a longer recessed nut for the back.

FWIW, Leader includes them with I805TR and I806TR forks for this very purpose.

I understand that, but if the mounting bolt doesn't even extend through the fork into the open area of the steerer, then the recessed nut won't be able to reach it no matter how long it is, because it will stop at the fork crown. The combination of a caliper with a short bolt and a lot of spacers can lead to this situation. This is why you can't just switch a rear caliper to the front.

I've installed countless brakes on I805TR forks and that's not the case with that particular fork (which is the one we're talking about here).

I've also never seen a fork with a crown so thick where the mounting bolt on a common front brake isn't long enough to extend inside. Ever.

I understand that I need a longer recessed nut. That wasn't the problem I was coming up against (well, not completely). Instead, the brake shoes where hitting the sides of the fork, and hence not able to sit flush against the fork. From reading above posts I assume I need spacers? That's funny because I suggested that to a local bike shop, and they turned that idea down. Of all of the bike shops I went to there were only two brakes that worked without spacers, a campagnolo and a dura-ace, but both were used and missing barrel adjusters. The final parting word I got from that shop was I needed a "special" brake to accommodate the fork, something more modern built for larger forks.

This all is strange to me because it doesn't seem like the size of the fork would determine whether this was a problem or not. I don't trust my novice understanding on all this, but having gone to multiple shops and seen for myself how the brakes didn't fit I don't really know what to do next. I contacted Leader, but haven't gotten a reply (probably because it's a stupid question).

Could something be wrong with the brake shoes I have?

Also, a recessed nut was supposed to have come with the fork? I guess I missed it and threw it away.

Installing brakes is pretty hard. (sarcasm)

All brake calipers come with a couple of serrated washers ("spacers", as you're calling them) to be installed between the caliper and your fork specifically to keep the caliper aligned and prevent your pads from making contact with your fork, like so:

Sounds like you may need to find a new bike shop too.
