Brand new to the forum and to fixed riding. I am loving every minute of it! Here is my eighthinch lo-fi right after a ride the other day.

A couple months ago I set my bike up for a 300mi in 24hr charity ultra-ride(?), on which I bonked 40 mi short, and left it that way since with plans to try again. Gave it a 2nd go-round this past Fri-Sat with similar disappointing results. The real rando guys on the ride wanted it to be unsupported but I am very thankful that there was somebody along in a car just in case of emergency. I needed it - was in state of total collapse while still quite a ways from “civilization”.
Guess I am going to let that idea go for awhile. After doing practically nothing beside lay in bed and post here a couple times the past 2 days – this morning I took pics of my bike in long-distance mode...
...then stripped it down to the frame for a big cleaning and polishing - will be rebuilding it into tarck, pics to follow…

300 miles fixed and you came up 40 short. I wouldn't be upset with that. Nice job!

Yes, only one lever is connected.
Thanks to everyone for your offerings of respect but I bonked - twice.
The rando guys thought I was crazy to try it on my fixed bike & in my case they were right. But…FYI, there have been a couple guys who posted here about their ultra-distance fixed gear rides that I was trying to emulate…
Hope you understand if I am not up to searching - but if they don't/won't chime in, its there for anybody who cares to search…

dude. 260 miles on any bike is a serious accomplishment, thats almost 100 miles more than my longest ride.
its totally possible, maybe just more training and/or an easier gear ratio
water+food is key in distance riding, i try and keep a strict schedule for eating and seems to work out for me

Thanx again for all the kind words. @Mumonkan is absolutely right about importance of proper hydration and nourishment, and I know that I do not handle it well. Will try again next year when it is cooler - maybe 3rd time will be the charm...

Yesterday I had this
Today I had this.
I got a new backwheel with a flip-flop hub and removed derrailleur and whatnot yesterday. I pedaled around 3.5 km back home and I really didn't feel that fixed gear riding was too difficult. True, at some point I forgot not to coast and was almost thrown off the bars, but I arrived home in one piece.
Today morning, when I woke up, I removed the grips and wrapped the bar with tape. Afterwards, I added two bar ends that effectively turn my flat handlebar into a bullhorn, only that the brakes are in the flat part. I put new pedals with toe clips on them, put on my bib and jersey and went for a short ride. 25 km afterwards, with downhill, flat and uphill sections, I see that I'm going to like fixed gear writing. I averaged 18 km an hour on the road parts and a lot less in the city (that's traffic lights and [expletive deleted] invading cycle lanes to you). The exercise was quite intense, though, but I do like that. There was only a really steep descent and yes, I looked like a demented monkey, but I did have a lot more momentum than going geared. I'll keep on working on it, but I'm quite sure I'll enjoy it.

Fresh Garbage
My friends and I carry a crap load of cooking grade maltodextrin on brevets. Pure liquid carbs that doesn't significantly affect how your water tastes. It really helps for these kinds of rides because sometimes it just feels like you can't eat enough to keep it up, especially for the pace of 300 miles/24hr. It's like Perpetuem at a fraction of the cost and tasteless.

Hey, all. First post. I'm from the New York metro area, which is what you say when you're actually from New Jersey because most people think all of New Jersey looks like to opening to "The Sporanos". Anyway, here's mine. Hoping to repaint it someday.
