Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? That shop sounds wack, yo.

If it was a 2012 bike, it would either be marked down already, or you'd have a decent chance of haggling. Since it is a 2013 bike, and you want it, chances are if they don't sell it to you at a discount, they'll be able to sell it to someone else shortly at full price. There's no incentive for the shop to mark it down. You might have some room if you were considering a $5500 bike, but you're basically buying an entry level bike -- not much room to move. Are there other accessories you are interested in -- helmet, different pedals, water bottle cage, fenders, rack, courier bag, etc.? If so, certainly you could ask if they'll throw in any freebies (probably not), or give you some kind of discount (ought to).

Mentioning that you can get a deal on a different brand of bike online might prompt them to tell you to go for it. I know I've said as much to customers in the past.

If you do buy a BD bike, you'll pay $50-75 for pro assembly anyway. You might not get the correct size and if you need to return it, you are paying for shipping there and back in an exchange situation. Along with packing the bike back up. Not that it matters too much with a SS/FG, but I bet the shop offers some kind of free service on the bike, like a tune-up or two -- no gears to worry about, but that should include wheel-truing. Setup is included in the price, and if you have issues with the bike, you have some place to go where if they are decent they'll set it right gratis. Finally, if there's some kind of warranty issue, you won't have to deal directly with the company, you'll be able to deal with the shop.

BDs MSRP is flat out crazy, I give you that, but I disagree with your statement here. If a retailer is at full MSRP, I go in expecting something. The fit is a nice perk, maybe. Do they sell the same service? How much? If they don't sell it, don't buy that it's worth much. Look for deals on service/accessories/clothing (rather than bike/parts) as part of the deal, where margins are generally better. And yes, please do be nice.

Went in, got fitted for the 57cm, put down my downpayment, should arrive tuesday...super excited to say the least.

Only deal I got was 10% of accessories, meh didn't seem too enticing to me. You guys think asking for an old, used set of drop bars is too much? Really want to chop-n-flop a pair. [h=3][/h]

They'll probably have take-offs they can sell you, but I wouldn't bank on getting anything for free.

You've received some good advice here and 10% off accessories at the time of purchase is fair and fairly common. Develop a relationship with your LBS and, as others have said, be respectful.

If you want bullhorns, just ask what they have. My LBS wouldn't give you bars to chop, but he'd sell you unwanted bullhorns for cheap.

Bring a six pack on Tuesday, don't ask for any freebies and shake the guy's hand when you leave.

by just showing my face a few times at a shop and buying a few random things and developing a rapport, he started giving me discounts and free parts, granted it was only a simple used cross lever, it was still cool. i plan on going in on tuesday and having him shorten a chain for my conversion and letting him know once i get my crankset hes where im coming , hes a cool shop owner and i plan to continue giving him my business over others. reminds me of exhale bikes in phx, awesome people.

infact i dont think ive ever asked for a discount but they gradually just started giving them to me because of how i was with them.

yup, I really like the guys at the shop. Can anyone recommend me any bullhorns that are under $40? Been looking at the origin 8 pursuits and and the ones made by Soma, however the Soma ones will require a shim. Don't plan on chopping and flopping the stock bars.
