They're laminated with a non-leather inner so they should hold up well. All my old school laminated straps have.

Ah nice! Didn't even knew that there was leather straps like this. Should be a good option to use track pedals like the sylvan.

Your cog is slipping.
Straps with buckles like that are kinda dumb IMO. If you're between sizes they'll always be either too loose or too tight.
