"Hot spot" on my foot

OK, this is probably not the best of all possible BF Forums to post this in, but i have a weird "hot spot" on my foot that develops after say 6 mi or so on the bike. Not agonizing, just numbing. I only post here because i ride fixed and i feel comfy here.

Setup:
stock 2012 Kilo cranks (if that matters for "q factor" or something. realllllly doubt it)
wellgo mountain SPDs
forte mountain shoes.

The hot spot is almost behind the outside ball of my right foot, but still kinda on it.

I wonder if it's not that i need to readjust the cleat, because if i move my right heel counterclockwise consciously, and think about it keeping it there, it goes away, but left to natural motion, i end up "duckfooted" to the limit of the cleat freeplay. both crankarms are scuffed from the inner heel area of my shoes (which have some stupid plastic exoskeleton in this area).

Thoughts? feel free to move this post.

Hot spots are usually cleat placement issues.
That, or the shoes just don't agree with your feet.

Find a guide online for cleat placement, I remember a good one, can't place it off the top of my head but I found it through googling, so you should be able to too.

It almost feels like my foot is too wide for the sole and is like, rolling the meat of my foot over the footbed of the shoe. but only on one side? hrm. i know dominant-leg feet are sometimes longer than the other leg's foot so maybe wider is also possible?

i'll google cleat placement. I'm a little scared of jacking with the cleats, because i pulled out once on one leg only (not this leg, actually) trying to "sprint" (i am not a fast or strong guy) and found out that, on that foot, i had set the cleat up so where it was "neutral" for me was basically "on the limit of freeplay." Then read up on google and old threads here and found it's possible to pull out of mtn style SPDs if you get up on the freeplay limit and then pull hard (the pedal "thinks" you are trying to twist out, and mtn pedals are set up to prefer release in that situation to road pedals).

thanks for the reply, man!

If you are scared of "jacking with the cleat," then get used to the hotspots.

Take out the insole.

Geezus Morgan, I'm so glad I got on this thread. I actually have been riding on SPDs for about 30 miles now and I recently noticed I had a twisting pain in my right knee when pedaling. I dance, so I took it as a dance related thing. After reading your post about pages dedicated to cleat placement, I found a page and realized I didn't account for the natural outward angle that my right foot has. Just fixed my cleat placement and I'd just like to thank you. Man, I hope that guy Spoonrobot doesn't see this.

Haha. It was a joke eh! For real about the SPD advice though. That part actually happened.

Or a support issue. Try some insoles/orthotics; it's helped for me.

Anyone have a good link for this? Yes, I know how to use the google, just thought someone might have one they've tested and liked.

thanks Nagrom, cos i googled, and found a ton of hits (including the steve hogg one) but wasn't sure which you liked. they seem to be a bit scattershot in their preferences.

My cleat is pretty much full back, consistent with hogg's fit number 2 (i think), but may (i think) need to be reclocked to put my foot where it needs to be vis-a-vis the axle, after reading several of these.
