Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Pedro's cog tool!

The one that's like a vice grips for cogs. Definitely my favorite bike tool. Renders fixed cog changes almost fun, especially compared to the old school drudgery of using the knuckle busting and sometimes frail chain whip.

PS....this may be well known 'roun these parts, but I'm new, so forgive me if this is repetitive.

Just saw that. Looks good, but I love the solidity of the locking mechanism on the Pedro's. My only tiny criticism is that I wish it were a hair longer (like the Hozan seems to be), but it still works sooo well.

Wait...my derp. That Pedro's Vice Whip tool is just for cogs. The Hozan Pliers are for lockrings.

However, the description I just read says it won't work on 1/8" cogs, which renders it useless to 97% of the fixed gear community.

I know, but that's wrong. I only ride 1/8" drivetrains and it works fine. It's a tighter fit on 1/8, but only requires a small amount of effort to disengage when done. No chance of any damage either. I was introduced to it by a shop guy who swore by it, and addressing that issue was one of the first things he mentioned.

Yeah, those are nice, even nicer that they get a nice firm grip without taking forever to get the jaws properly positioned. Just get in the ballpark and you're good to go.

I'm sure that works well, but it seems to be a messy, stressful, and potentially frame scratching 'fast 'n dirty' technique that I'd just as soon avoid. Pedro's Vice Whip is clean, sturdy, and extremely effective.

Yeah I tried that and gosh darn that cassette just wouldn't come off! Then I tried with a chainwhip and that didn't work either!

Years and years ago, I bought a "hypercracker" for a bike tour I was going on in case I broke a drive side spoke. I haven't used it in years, but it's still in the toolbox.

Neat little thing.

I also have a length of chain with a little rubber coated hook to hook a chainstay and rotafix/service UG cassettes. Also a neat little tool.

E: this thing, was on the same page. Go figure:

Hypercracker seconded here. Love that thing. And you can apply [body weight inserted here] torque with it, too.
