Help for Newbie Single Speeder Needed on Set-up

I bought my first single speed (used) and it rides amazing EXCEPT going uphills and really getting into it -- the chain, etc. feels like it does when you are a multi-speed and it is not fully in a particular gear (choppy feeling - almost feel like I am going to break something). Can someone tell me what I need to do to tweak the bike to fix this problem?

Sorry if this is very vague, but I am new to this. I love the bike, but need to fix this issue.

Is there a procedure for how to set up the proper tension amount or do I just do trial and error and loosen it a bit?

Chain line could be off as well. Fixies are quite sensitive to this with their shorter chains, and the higher the quality (tighter tolerances), the greater the sensitivity. If you don't know how to check it, there are plenty of youtube guides.

I like a little less than an inch of stretch in the chain. Depending on how often you change gearing or if you race track, but slack means versatility and it allows you to change gearing without necessarily changing chain length.

Better yet, buy another chain. They're cheap. You can add/subtract links as you go.
