Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Havent been on here for a while! Two weeks ago I raced my first alleycat. I got spanked because I got lost. Knowing the city you are racing is a huge advantage. It was fun though.

Last weekend the shop I ride for let me borrow a Surly Pug Ops for a fatbike race. It followed along a 75% dry river bed (mostly sand a rock section and some frozen puddles). It was a toasty 17 really dark night. The course was a fun 2 mile loop with a couple of jumps off of littered tractor tires filled with sand. We started a bonfire when we got there and left the whiskey too close to the fire. After we passed the bottle around and found the temperature to be roughly 123 we took two warm up laps. On the second lap the race promoter and course designer hit a dead tree stump and yard-saled. It was one of the worst crashes I have ever seen, the fact it was on a fat bike multiplied how bad it looked by 40. Literally, he flew 14 feet over the bars to his chest/face. Once we got him up and realized he was moderately OK we all skipped the race and drank around the fire. From time to time we would do a couple more laps. It was an absolutely great night. Fat bikes are soooooo much fun.

I never do more than 14km in the winter, but in some horrific weather, socks on socks on socks. Block the wind.

I'll have to try out those toe warmer things, might just double sock it to see if that works since I hate spending money on riding bikes.

Last night after some heavy drinking, me and the roommate decided to learn how to do bar spins since we both have risers currently and well, I landed one and he landed like five but we had a bigger failure rate than success, then today I took the MTB out to find some trails around the house and came up empty. Oh well.

Layering socks also cuts off circulation which will actually make you colder.

My usual circle of friends is in Vegas this weekend (I hate having older friends (3 more months chyea)), so I caught up with a buddy from high school over a bottle of Kraken.

It was cool.

Ordered some Under Armour cold gear shirts, some Nike neck/face warmers and some windproof gloves from Performance Bike. Riding after work is getting cold now on SoCal.

Today I actually reached my mileage goal for the year. Not bad considering I missed 3 1/2 months.
