Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

true, we are at times packrats. I'm this close to tying a grannycart to the bike for trips to the market.

I'm told you can get away with bringing bikes not sure how it would be packed tho... If anyone's ever made the Boston - NYC trip with their ride intact on a bus/train, lemme know...been meaning to check out Boston soon.

I took mine on Greyhound. They don't require that you box them though I decided I didn't like the idea of my bike, especially the wheels, exposed to whatever might bump into it. $10 for a bike box seemed like good insurance, you can get them at the counter, just bring what you need to break down the bike. For me that meant spinning the stem off to the side, dropping the bars in line with the frame (I don't think I completely removed them though you might need to if your stem is too long), and removing the pedals.

i've never had a problem with the bike on any of the chinatown buses. no fee, either. if they did give me a hassle, i'd pretend like i was going to another bus and i'm sure they'd reconsider. too much competition between the companies.

Well, if you decide to rent, there's a couple actually in Jersey City my friends have used. The closest one was by the Pavonia-Newport station...about a 1/2 mi. away.

my friends did the philly-nyc trip with bikes and encountered no problems. not sure which company or if they paid. i believe they've done philly-DC with no problems.

I saw some guys loading two giant bass amps plus guitars into one the other day, so I can't imagine that they would fuss over a bike. As long as it didn't interfere with their delivery of various produce and commodities.
