-+- How to paint a bike frame -+-

Scraps and scratches. Luckily, no dents.
    Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hsKHT346rM

Sand down all the paint on the frame and fork with grid sand paper 300.

Spray paint 3-4 layers of the primer. It doesn't matter what color the primer is because the base coat will cover it all up. Add a coat of primer every 30minute. Every 40minute for the base coat and lastly the clear coat. I used Dupli-Color car paint because they are durable and scratch resistant. Also they are meant to take on harmful rocks and ensures maximum coverage.

    End result

stay 10" or more apart from the frame while you spray paint

do not paint in hot sunlight. Also do not paint in hot humid or freezing temperatures.

Good onya for giving it a go. Frames are the merry devil to paint and while I can't see the paint closely in the photo, for you to be pleased with it after the work you put into it, it must be pretty good. Well done. It's also a riding position a real human could use. Nice bike.

Unlike some comments you may get, thanks for the thread, this is more interesting than the usual fare.
I had a good bike ... so I FIXED it

Didn't seem too bad in the before pics, but then again we don't see what you saw in person. Looks like it turned out pretty good though in the end.

I too recently got done painting a frame. It was spray-bombed 3 different colors and just looked gnarly and I wanted to give it some new life.

I'd wait a LOT longer between coats. Like long enough for the primer/paint to dry enough to sand smooth (with progressively higher grit sand paper). Of course, that takes a loooong time and you may not be trying for quite that kind of finish. Still, it looks decent to me the way you did it. (caveat: I'm on my phone)

Don't like the matte spray paint, makes the bike look cheap. It looked better before you painted it.

Scratches might suggest that you actually ride your bike, who could live with the shame?

Don't get it either really. Perhaps if we were talking a totally rad new paint job, but this is like Botox for bikes. In my opinion there's nothing wrong with a few wrinkles and scars - in any event it's unavoidable with age and only adds character. As long as your bike is clean and fit for purpose, you're good to go.

Still if OP is happy, that's the most important thing, and from the sound of it this has been a great experience. Nothing beats working on your bike (even cosmetically), especially when you're over-the-moon with the end result.

Now ride the damn thing, before respraying it in a couple of weeks .
