Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? You are going to have to carry around another chain with you when you want to switch gears, plus your chainline will not be good in any ratio you put it in. If you want a multi-speed fixed gear get one of these https://www.amazon.com/Sturmey-Archer.../dp/B0042R50QQ

No, I do not want a shift lever on my bicycle and no, I will not need to carry another chain.

My horizontal dropouts are really long and I've been able to accommodate a 5T difference in the rear cog. Also, if I used two chainrings the chainline could be set perfectly set though I would only be able to use one cog from either side with each chainring and the rear wheel will stay in exactly the same place if the chainrings and cogs differ by the same number of teeth. Say I could run my 54/17 or 52/19 with same chainlength and perfect chainline. Then I might run 54/20 or 52/22 each with correct chainline and same chainlength but the rear axle would be slightly forward (3/8", right?) in the dropouts.

For starters I'm ordering the Dos ENO 20/22t and running that on my current free hub and I'll maybe have to re-dish the wheel slightly to get my chainline correct. I'm gonna do this step by step as I research and select which components to use - I haven't decided which fixed/fixed hub I would like but after the hub selection I'll build the wheel, get the surly dingle and then figure out what to do about chainrings.

Anyone know where I can find a 52 chainring that fits the stock schwinn crank? Looks like 130mm bolt pattern. I like the Origin8 but they don't have one in 52t.

Thanks!
Yes, by having two bikes...or if you're cheap, have two different rear wheels and adjust your chain as needed

Thanks. But this question has already been answered sooo many times by other smart assess (myself included).

To reiterate, here's what I've decided: flip flop fixed/fixed hub (personally, I like the Phil Wood track style hub), with a Surly Dingle 17/19 on one side because those cogs will give me a lot of skid patches if I decide to do skid stops and they will give a nice gearing I think. A White Industries Dos ENO on the other side of the hub with a 20/22 cogs to give me a lower gear for different riding conditions. Currently I'm using a stock 54t chainring but it is super tall, so I'm considering dropping down to a 50/48 double. Which should give me four different gearings with a straight chainline: 50/17, 48/19; 50/20, 48/22 but I'll have to move the axle slightly in the dropouts.

Sure you don't want to throw a Sturmey-Archer S3X hub in there while you're at it?

I like Sugino chainrings, but don't buy anything until you've measured the BCD.

Alo means you will have to adjust rear brake everytime you switch chainrings.

Not necessarily. Forward facing horizontal dropouts tend to be angled in such a way that you don't have the brake going out of whack too much when moving the axle forward or back.

No, but they'll ship to the USA. I'm about to get one. Some alternatives, readily available Stateside:
TOMIcogs, made in USA, laser-cut stainless : https://tomicog.blogspot.com/
Budget Far-Eastern alternative, available at your LBS: https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...s.php?id=61152

I'm going velosolo b/c they're made by Renthal, and everything Renthal that i've ever seen is triple-plus-extra hawt. I may even spring for a chainwheel to "match", perverted as that seems now that I've typed it.

BCD: 130mm I like the Sugino too. I read some reviews on the origin8 and basically everyone said they're junk. I like the Surly and White Ind stuff too but no one seems to make a 52T with a 130 BCD that would mate to my current chainring but the stock chainring actually bolts to the crank at a BCD of about 50mm and has holes at BCD 130 mm to bolt on additional chainrings. So....there's that to think about.

No rear brake for now

Is someone gonna blow a gasket if I get out the OA torch and remove the braze ons and kickstand? I personally don't consider this a very unique or valuable frame but I'm not really paying attention to the vintage bike market. The paint is wasted and there's other frame damage that will need to be filled with brass before a repaint.

How about an Alfine 11 speed hub mounted with an 11 speed cluster feeding off a 3 speed chainring set up. Should be a few gears available then. I was going to suggest a Rohloff 14 speed but that'd be silly.

Thank you everyone for the great advice!

I've decided to just buy a car instead.

Dealing with used car salespersons has to be way more fun than using the Singlspeed and Fixed Gear forum.

Take care!!

It would be very nice if that was a final good-bye.

Maybe if we all pool our luck it will, collectively, hold up.
