Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Show us your Geared FIXED gear bikes

We've got a thread for geared bikes, we've got a thread for ss/fg bikes. This thread is for those hybrids that are both fixed gear AND geared ... and by geared, I mean gears you can change while riding along, a flip flop hub doesn't cut it (without a video of you flipping the rear wheel while riding the thing)

The first person to pull that off wins the whole forum.

And to get the thread rolling, unless someone beats me to it, here's my Hillbrick. You may have seen her before in pure fixed gear mode, but I've recently fitted a Sturmey Archer S3X hub to her.

The wheels are Velocity DeepVs, the S3X in the back and an Ultegra hub at the front.

Yes, she's filthy, this is a working bike and it's been that sort of weather dammit.
I've chosen to run the shifting cable along the chain stay because I wanted to use a down tube shifter and because I usually have panniers on which would foul the cable.

The frame was built for fixed gear and so didn't come with gear bosses on the tube. I'm using a single sided clamp on boss that I got off ebay - it's actually a Huret with a modern stud fitted. The bloke who does the conversions does beautiful work. I'm using one of those wheel things to have the cable change direction at the bb.

I went for a downtube shifter because I didn't think I'd change gears that often and wanted as free a running cable as possible. I do not regret it.

The bike itself was custom made using Colombus Zona tubing and rides beautifully. I live in the Adelaide Hills and have some pretty solid hills to get up and down - down hill runs at 60km/hr are a daily treat and with 48x19 gearing, the cadence gets a bit stupid. I've set her up so 2nd gear gives me that same gear (66gi) - this allows me to run down the hills at a half sensible cadence (for a fixed gear rider), that 60km/hr is quite comfortable now. Unfortunately, the lowest gear doesn't really allow me to drag my fat old arse back up the hill (there's a lot of 8% and some 10%) so the 24inch gear is still used, but it does give a very comfortable head wind gear or a 'I'm knackered' gear for general riding.
Overall, for an all-rounder, it's been a great modification to an already much loved bike.

just be careful if you drop the bike on the right side, that little chain gets bent out of wack easily

You could also use Schlumpf or Hammerschmidt bottom brackets to get multiple gearings. They're not quite drop-in-and-go solutions, though. IIRC the BB shell has to be slightly chamfered to install the Schlumpf, and it looks like you need extra hardware on the BB shell to mount the Hammerschmidt.

Here is a nice example with a Schlumpf Mountain Drive.

That a hub brake on the front wheel Mumonkan?

Nice looking bike. These hubs really lend themselves to all round bikes, work horses so to speak, because the expand the operational zone of the bike with those extra gears.

Is that the one where you kick a button the bb to change? The article didn't make it clear. Certainly a nice, clean way to get the extra gear though.

This is probably because I'm off work because I'm crook (sick) and spending too much time on the internet and bored and ...
but why do I get the feeling that one of those geared bbs combined with the S3X would make a lovely fixed gear bike for riding in very hilly terrain? The S3X on its own gives nothing like the range I need at my age (not so my hyper-fit, hyper-strong son) but with this extra gearing, maybe I could avoid the 24 inch gear altogether.

Okay, okay, I've lost the plot haven't I

Oh goody, and I can get the Schlumpf Mountain Drive for a mere $900 here in Oz. Makes wearing out shoes seem a good option for the time being.
